Ebony is diabetic, but I knew that when I got her

I was hoping she wasn't really FD, that it was just stress from being in a cage at the Humane Society from Thanksgiving to Good Friday, but that's not the case.

Hometesting has been difficult to say the least. She bit me a lot, drew blood and thankfully I do have ABs on hand for that sort of thing. Tried the kitty burrito, tried snacks and all kinds of things but it just wasn't going to happen at the time. I've been hometesting since 2005 and have had several FDs, this one was like none I've ever worked with.

My vet saw her and we both felt Ebony was not FD, her symptoms had disappeared within days of the diet change and being at my house, practically no water intake at all. Ebony tried to bite the vet too, so we didn't do any bloodwork there either. The plan was to take Ebony off insulin and run a fructosamene in a few weeks.

Thankfully we have feliway diffusers set up now and with the help of Bean showing Ebony how much fun can be had, Ebony is turning into a new kitty. So I gave it another try last night and did not get bitten!!! BG was 304. We have started Ebony on Lantus again and will continue to work with her on hometesting. I really want to avoid getting bit again so it's probably going to be one hometest a day for now, but I think we'll be at regular hometesting speed in a few weeks.

Last night Ebony and Bean were in the hall and lost a toy under the basement door. It's amazing how close these two are in just a few short weeks. Bean, and OTJ sweetheart is such a good girl, I could not have asked for a better kitty :)

Here's a picture of Ebony trying to retrieve the toy while Bean watches.

Feliway is also known as Comfort Zone, it's a synthetic pheromone that relaxes cats, it's similar to their own scent when they mark things and tells them that the area is their own so they are safe. It comes in a spray, wipes that you can use to rub on the cat which is good for after vet visits if your other cats get upset by the vet smell and the diffusers that plug in like scented plug ins.

Jennifer, with Mishka I used gloves, for weeks, and I also used an E-collar. It kept her from being able to get to me but damn hard to test the ear. She was awful for the shots. I started cutting tips off of the right hand glove, little by little, then down to the first knuckle, and so on. So hard though wearing gloves and testing and shooting but hey! It worked. Took about 3 months total before I fully trusted her.

Hope, I hadn't thought of gloves, can't imagine how that works, but that certainly is safer than shooting blind. We're at a small dose now, for that reason, only 1/2U BID of Lantus. I'm going to test her again tonight (anti-jinx) and hope that she gets used to this quickly.

I think that once she begins to trust you, that you will have no problems testing her. Spot was the same way when I first got her. She also hated the burrito. Once I stopped using it, then things were much easier.

Thanks Lisa, I did not burrito her last night. While it was difficult keeping her still, it did work out better that way, she was less terrorized by me :)

I have taken light weight LEATHER gardening gloves and cut off just the tips
of the fingers I need to get control of whatever I'm doing. This cuts down considerably
on the amount of hand which is exposed to slashing teeth !

But... did you guys all see how cute Ebony and Bean are sitting in the hallway  Ebony is the one with the paw under the door, Bean is the one letting her do all the work.

I didn't realize until this morning that a plastic ring, like a gallon milk jug ring, had gone under the door. We opened the door this morning and Ebony got her toy from the top step and continued playing with it. She waited 10 hours to get that back :-D

Wow Jen, it must be scary to get bitten. Sorry that I can't remember but aren't you a Reiki level one practitioner? Or were you going to learn it?
I KNOW that Reiki helps relax them, no doubt. After I do a little on Merlin he turns to butter and I can clip his nails with no fussing.

I have the pheromone collars on all the cats here. I found that it has really calmed Shadoe, and a collar on Booboo has truly turned her into a calmer cat - she is not diabetic and refuses to be touched, but with the collar, there are days that she allows touching.
I would try the collar because it goes where that cat goes, so is better than the spray.

hmmmmm....it would be nice if they made collars like that for beans too! :-D
beautiful pic of 2 good friends. both girls right? ebony i predict will grow so trusting with the help of bean and you, Jenn, that she may be the poster kitty for bad kitty turned good in the pokey dept.
Sending love to ebony...She has stolen my heart. bites and all.
