eating and syringe problems and general unhappiness

Today I went to Rite Aid in search of Ketostix. Guess what? Didn't have any. Apparently no one in this town tests for ketones, or they get them somewhere else. They said they could order them for $12. I declined. Lately, all I am seeing is dollar signs. So the search continues.

I did get some U-100 syringes. I think these are gonna be a no-go. They aren't any better than the U-40 for markings on them. The first number on them is 5, and goes up in increments of 5 with 10 lines in between. This morning I just eyeballed about a 1/3 of a unit. Really wish I could be more precise. I'm so frustrated!

I don't know if I can handle this. I'm trying to chalk it up to being sick myself this week and sick of gloom outside. Today Chester has not wanted to eat wet food beyond two bites, this I think is the root of my worries today. He wants to go and eat the dry. I don't want him to eat the dry. He seems to be feeling pretty well and is happy today, but I am really getting concerned about this eating thing. I'm not usually home all day like I have been. I can't be here to ply him with food 5 times a day. I don't want him to be feeling hungry, though, granted, he has the pounds to lose. With 4 other cats, I need him to eat when it's time to eat, because we have to keep the food separated. Of course the other cats are dying to eat his food, which isn't a problem, but I want HIM to eat it. There is a lower carb dry food call EVO that I could try, I guess. BUT of course, it's expensive, but maybe not more than canned on a per serving basis. I don't know, haven't done the math. As it is, he doesn't eat even a 5.5 oz can of food in a day.

It will be okay!

I can't help with the syringe issue, but I can help with the urine ketone test strips.

PM me your address and I will drop you some in the mail tomorrow!

Have you tried these ideas for the food?

Warm it up till stinky.
Mix his favorite snack in. The freeze dried chicken and fish is kind crunchy and makes a nice "dressing"
Chop it up and add a little warm water so it has some "gravy"
Use FortiFlora. It's the animal digest that makes dry food so irresistible. For some cats it's magic. Others, not so much.

Any chance you could get everyone on wet so the "grass wouldn't be greener" in the other bowls? Sophisticat and Friskies seem to be the cheapest.

And Jenny, the last few days, Chester has been in the regulated range - 200s at preshot with 100s at nadir. This is a huge accomplishment! His numbers look really good.

Thank you, Sue. Just when I think things are terrible something good happens. He was ready to go into the bathroom (where I'm feeding him) to eat without me having to drag him in there. He ate some this evening, not a ton, but some. I tried the warming up even though it was room temp, but 10 secs made it smellier.

And thank you, kse for the offer. I'm going to look one more time and then if I can't find them I may take you up on it.

I keep telling myself things are going well. Guess I'm just in a mood.

I am very sincere in my offer. Don't spend a lot of time looking for them....they are very cheap and I will be happy to send you some!

You don't know if you can do this? I for one, know you can. You can get frustrated but you aren't allowed to doubt your abilities - you've shown us differently already.... :-D

Syringes - it's not as critical that you give "1/3 unit" as it is giving a 'consistent' amount.

EVO - there's EVO canned and EVO dry. EVO canned 95% is zero carb and pure meat and gar gum as thickener. EVO Turkey/Chicken DRY is only 8% carbs - amazing compared to about anything else. KT's a "HARD FOOD" baby so while everyone else eats their bowl of dry, KT gets his 1/8th cup or so...and no kibble spike! It's not terribly expensive when only being fed to one cat.

BIG HUG!!!

Thanks Squeaky and KT, and everyone for the encouragement. I'm not going to give up. If he simply isn't going to eat the canned after a while, I will get the EVO dry to try. A friend got her kitty OTJ on it, so I know it will work. And Chester's numbers are pretty good. I hope we can maintain it!
