Teresa and Poopy

Alrighty...after watching Poopy and his eating habits, I have found he eats a chunk at meal times (every 6 hours) and then snacks every 1-2 hours. How can I get good BG readings, knowing they are food related?

When I fed Poopy only at PS times, he saved food for snacking. That's why I broke it up into feeding every 6 hours, hoping he'd quit snacking. Still does the same - saves food for snacking.

Any ideas? Thoughts? Opinions?

Many folks here advocate free feeding. That’s prob good in many instances (ECID) but if you have a hoover kitty or in our case an Asher  , that doesn’t work. We really didn’t get anywhere until we fed the exact same thing every day, and fed only twice a day before each shot morning and evening. We have stayed with that even since our big change this year, in hopes that it still may work for us. I remember reading when I first arrived here that Gator weighed H’s food everyday. A lightbulb went off in my head and we tried it and once we stayed consistent with dose and food for awhile, it worked. My 5 cents that are probably worth 2 :-D

I've got a similar dilema. My boys suddenly aren't eating everything I give them. Sometimes there's 1/4-1/2 a can leftover-but not always. I've also noticed that Cass has better numbers on the days they leave food. I hate to waste the food but I don't want to underfeed either. How much should I feed them? They currently get 1 1/2 5.5 oz cans of friskees each a day. The vet said slightly more than 1 to 2 cans was the right amount calorie wise. Suggestions?

Dear Abby,

So I thought I'd try something different this morning. Since Poopy normally eats half the 5.5 oz can right off the bat, this morning I only served him 1/2 a can. The little (well, not so little) stinker ate half of what I offered, leaving 1/2 for snacking!

This means I'm going to need to figure out how to dose based on numbers I know are food related...rather should assume are food related since we all know not to know what a cat will do next. ohmygod_smile

AMPS 319 (which really is +11 but saw no sense in waiting for him to go up further and I'm trying to get him back on schedule), shot 2.0u.

I don't understand why his numbers are overall higher than before when on the 4% carb food. I know I'm blonde but I'm usually pretty darn quick. WTH is the deal?

Dear Frustrated -

You are correct in trying to adjust the food to analyze his numbers. However, his kitty instincts are kicking in, even if he never had to hunt & track & save some for later. You may wish to consider quarterly, or even hourly feedings throughout the day. Some of the other former grazers seem to be okay with eating only twice daily, but most become ravenous and start to scavenge or chew the furniture. To spare your table legs, you may wish to consider this as well.

Good luck,
Abby
