How many of you use just the lancet and not the lancing device? Do you use ear or paw?
I do not have any issues doing the ear testing but I was thinking about new people joining and learning how to properly test on the ears or paws. I came across a couple videos. The paw testing one is very to the point and simple for those that can't test on ears.
Paws-

Ear- and this is how you do not test a cats ear i repeat do not poke the ear like this ever no wonder this poor cat is growling and attacking her.

OMG She is attacking that poor kitty    A good video for how to NOT do an ear poke.

I personally freehand the lancet rather than using the device. I find for myself, I have better control over where I am poking and how deep I poke. I use only the ears for my two since neither one of them is very fond of having their feet messed with. It is hard enough just to do the nail clipping with mine. :)

Jeez! Did she actually just say on that video 'I think it went through'. Went through?! What?! The ear?! Poor kitty. I think this lady needs a little bit more education on the technique. I bet if she poked him correctly he wouldn't need to be wrapped like that. :(

I am more perplexed at where she learned to do this! I havent seen any videos so far do what she is doing to that poor cat.

Thing is, lily does protest a little but she would be more stressed if I wrapped her up and just randomly jabbed her with sharp objects!

I always take from the paw pad and use the lancing device. Takes me about 30 seconds from start to finish each time, he purrs and sometimes he falls asleep. With the ear there is too much fidgiting and positioning, even without the lancing device.

don't forget sitting on her to top it off. The whole thing just blows my mind.
I just think if he was not wrapped up and she knew where to poke it may have gone better. I'm not going to lie, I do crouch over lily otherwise she would be off! Well, it's more I sit on my heels behind her and she is in between my legs. She doesn't seem to care too much and often purrs then asks for food because she knows she will either get a meal or treat after being poked :)

Apparently in all the videos she said she watched she never saw this one- best one for how to it correctly

I do the same with my 2 kitties. My Tuxie is great and just sits on the mat purring away waiting for his poke, since he knows food will follow. He sits quietly, and does not move until I take the cotton pad off his ear...then straight to the food dish. ;)

Maxie is not quite as easy. She HATES been restrained. I found that if I just sat her on the mat between my legs with one arm resting slightly around her chest she is quite good. Luckily she is a good bleeder and I only ever have to do one poke. She has gotten to the point where she waits until she hears the beep on the meter and I hold her ear, then say "all done" before she scampers off.

I use the lancing device with the cap off. I think I'd personally be more likely to poke through the ear (YIKES!) doing it free hand than using the lancet. I also test on the inside of the ear flap instead of the outside. Makes it much easier to see the bead of blood even on black fur! And I would never ever try cocooning or sitting on my cat the way that woman did. I'd have one very angry uncooperative kitty! My girl will lay down for me, let me test and the worse thing I ever have to deal with is the dreaded head shake just as the blood bead is forming. Fortunately, I'm usually fast enough to avoid that problem! I don't offer treats. Testing has to be done. Her reward is some sweet talk, kisses and cuddles or a brushing!

This sounds just like Goof. He just lays on his side until he hears the beep, then he slowly sits up and looks at me as if to say, " Okeedoke, LET'S EAT". Lol :cat:

That was the first video I watched on youtube about home testing, and even I kept thinking something wasnt right with how it went. So glad I found this forum, or poor Cooter might have wound up like Junior! I free hand with the lancet, I tried to use the lancing device but he would shake his head right when I'd try to hit the button, was too cumbersum... what setting do you use with the lancing device to those that do use it, and any tricks to help someone who is starting with the lancing device?

If you're doing OK freehand, there's really no need to use the device at all. The important part of the whole thing is to get a blood drop...there's no "advantage" using the device....it's just a matter of what works best for you to get that precious blood!

Carter passing out right before the prick.

After reading the responses I am not going to watch the video for fear I may track the person down and stab them n the ear-
once again.... this s why I work with animals !:cat:
the scary thing is a fdmb member already said that video was one of the first ones they watched when researching how to ear test so apparently it comes up easy enough.

When I googled home testing a diabetic cat after Cooters dx, the bad video is the first thing that comes up... luckily the good one is the second, hopefully folks can tell which way is better from the demeanor of the cats in the vids :cat:

Is there a way to contact the person on youtube besides the comment box?

The person who made that video is a very nice lady who is a member of the FDMB who was simply trying to help.

Some videos are better than others. Luckily there are many to choose from.

Sometimes advice given by well meaning members in the forums isn't quite up to par. Luckily, there are enough experienced members around to make alternate suggestions when necessary.

Just a suggestion... bookmark videos for newbies that you find helpful.
In addition to what you come across on the Internet, there are also plenty of videos to choose from here: Hometesting Links and Tips.

Let's try to keep this positive, ok? Maybe it's time to move on to another topic... or start a new topic... something like "My favorite hometesting videos". :)

Thank you!
