? Ear mites

Does anyone here deal with flare ups of ear mites? My cat gets them like twice a year. I noticed today that his symptoms are back . I do have zymox at home and am thinking about treating him at home rather than paying for a vet visit . Any advice on the situation ? And can mites cause spikes in levels at all ?

Are you sure that it is ear mites? A bacterial or fungal infection is more common in household with a stable population.
What Zymox product do you have? I am not aware of any that are good against ear mites.
An ear infection or ear mites can raise BGs.

Well he was at the vet in April and had a check up .. his blood counts were good (didnt show infection ) and the vet said there was black stuff in his ear and could be the start of mites .. but didnt say much more than that . You can tell when you touch his ears it bothers him and he shakes his head but hes fine most of the time . I only have one other animal and they arent even together.

Ear mites are easy to diagnose. Just put a little mineral oil in the ear and swab out the gunk and and look at it under a microscope. Even a magnifying glass will work. You use the oil to prevent the mites from scattering. You can also likely see using an otoscope (device that looks in the ear). If you are fast you can see them scatter when you turn the light on on the otoscope.
One can also get black ear gunk from a bacterial or fungal infection. There are some Zymox products at will kill bacteria and fungi. However, there are also Zymox products that ony clean the ears.

Home cure for mites: put half a teaspoon of edible oil down each ear, massage it in. Do this twice a day for two weeks. Good luck!
