Hello all. Let me start off by giving a little history. I joined this board about 5 years ago when my girl had urinary problems, thanks to many on this board I was able to get help. My boys ended up getting blockages later, I saved one boy but lost the other about 8 months ago. My remaining two are now on Hills prescription food for urinary. Currently though my cats (my boy Max specifically.) suffer badly from ear mites. I've had them treated at the vet successfully before but never managed to get both cats treated at once so they had reoccurances. Right now my boy needs treatment badly, he pees all over himself from the pain during scratching fits, needless to say that causes issues. The store bought treatments make things worse and I cant get Max to the vet for several weeks. A friend gave me a bottle of fipronil but I've never been any good at applying this stuff and I worry about overdosing since it isn't premeasured. Not sure what to do, I'm open to suggestions.

If you do a Google search on Fipronil for cats, you can check the dosage on the cat versions of it. I don't think it gets mites. One product is FrontlinePlus.
Ear cleansers will help remove some of the mites while you wait to see a vet.

I thought I read somewhere that it got ear mites somewhat. The dosage written on the bottle that was given to me says 1.2 ml but that seems like too much to me

Mita-clear is OTC and can help knock down ear mites, but it's important to get the ears clean first...and if you don't see improvement soon, I'd see if I could work something out with your vet on payment....bad enough cases can cause permanent damage

Hoping you find something that helps!

Mita-Clear is my favorite and I've used it for lots of rescue cats/kittens. As Chris said, the ears should be cleaned first but then it only needs 2 treatments applied a week apart, maybe 3 if the infestation is severe. It's gentle on the cat's ears and has a pleasant scent. I found that Revolution did next to nothing for ear mites.

Most mites are resistant to fipronil and other over the counter treatments. Revolution (selamectin) or Ivermectin (oral heartworm pills) will kill mites. Gotta treat both at once though, and wash cat beds. They don't really live in the environment.

Be careful with ear mite washes, many contain permethrin/pyrethrans which are very toxic to cats.
