Wanting to know if you can prick the outside of the front part of the ear too or is it just the back side edge only?the vein wraps around the ear so was wanting to know if you can do that?

I kept looking online for an answer but kept seeing only the back of ear so was wondering.im glad I can move around one that area is getting tender now.need to give that area a break.saw a site say don't clip claws too short to get a blood test!so some people in this world must have tried this in order for them to mention it.that is so painful could not imagine doing something like that.ouch!

My poor Max has spots all over his ears!
Their poor little ears.red and white cats it is very easy to see the skin etc.thru the fur on ears so can see the booboos and small red bruises so easy.miss kitty will come walking up to me and first thing I look at is her red spots on her ears and feel bad.

I know what you mean, Squallie's ears are very sensitive and they bruise so easily, I feel a pang of guilt every time I poke his poor little ears!

Definitely work your way up and down the lobe so you're not poking the same spot repeatedly.

After you get your blood sample, try to put some pressure on the testing site. I generally pinch & hold it for 10-15 seconds, or until Jenks gets annoyed. I find that it not only staunches the bleeding, but also prevents blood from accumulating under the skin which can be a contributing factor to bruising.

Finally, rub some antibiotic ointment (ointment, not cream!) w/ pain relief into the testing area. I get a tube of the store brand triple antibiotic ointment with pain relief for a couple bucks. It lasts forever.

If your kitty's ears seem particularly sensitive, the Testing & Shooting sticky also recommends -- "Ledum 30C homeopathic remedy [which is available] at any health food store. Dissolve one tablet in a small bottle of pure water and then apply one or two drops to each ear every day. Ledum is great for puncture wounds."

I have been holding the area to stop bleeding but she still gets a red spot sometimes.i have been using novolin n the last week or so and been having to test a lot on her ears and was just moving around on back side of ear.glad can test anywhere on ear.she usually don't have sensitive ears but from all the testing has made it tender.does that ointment come in something that isn't triple antibotic?miss kitty can't use triple cause she has allergies to it.i put erythromycin ointment on her ears before and it causes the blood not to bubble up for me it just bleeds into her fur.dont know why figured ointment would help it bubble up better.i have used orajel on myself on wounds that hurt but it don't work unless skin is already broken except on gums.

Murphy had a terrible allergic reaction to the neosporin ointment - someone in the forum told me about Halo Cloud Nine herbal healing salve for pets - I got some and love it - can buy at Whole foods and elsewhere I guess - I ordered from Amazon. You can also use just vasoline. My cats ears are a pathetic mess of scabs and red marks - I am having to back off testing a bit - he's been growling and swatting at me for a few weeks now when I poke, but the other day he sank his teeth deep into my forearm - It seems like the closer to the top of the ear, the more sensitive. I try to poke by the middle of the ear but he still feels it, even with a 33 lancet

Wow ouch!so glad my cats aren't biters or scratchers.they usually just tell me off verbally when they aren't happy thank goodness.guess he says if you poke him he pokes you lol

@Cat girl - Sadly, that's the extent of my knowledge on the subject. I hope someone comes by with a good suggestion for a safe, non-antibiotic pain relief cream for your sweet kitty :)
