Just joined with a newly diagnosed 8 year old cat named Georgie. Was released from the vet last night and this morning all I am getting on the blood meter reading is E-5. I tested on me and got a normal numerical reading. I fed her and gave 2 units of Lantus at 8am and retested there blood at 11 and still got E-5. using the Trueresult metering system. My vet opens at 3pm which seems a long time away. Is there anything I need to do for her now? Thanks!

Hi, and welcome to the forum. What do we call you?

I have an E message on my meter sometimes too - not sure if its a 5 or not. I use an Accucheck Aviva. It generally means an error as I have not got enough blood on the strip. Its annoying. Try testing again and get a bit more blood so the whole of the yellow strip is covered. You should get a reading then.

Come back and post how you got on.

If you wind up calling the meter company to find out what this means, be sure NOT to say you are using it for your cat! Just say it's for your child or mom.

Do you think you could have missed the shot? I would definitely speak to your vet if you can.

Welcome to FDMB.

So you're giving 2 units of Lantus.
What are you feeding?

We have found that meters with True (or Free) in the name may not work well for cats. You may want to consider a different meter.

Hello and welcome to you and Georgie! Sorry to hear you are getting an error message from your meter. If it's an option for you, I would recommend purchasing a different meter. Your current meter doesn't seem to work on your kitty, as you mentioned it did work on you. If you live in the USA, Walmart carries a reliable and affordable meter called the ReliOn Micro. Several folks here use it on their kitties. It's about $15 for the meter. Additional test strips cost about $9 for 20, $20 for 50, or $36 for 100. It's what I use on my Hannah. It's pretty easy to use and only needs a very small drop of blood. I'm sure Georgie would appreciate that.

Just a thought, here, but you are using a new strip every time you test, right? I messed up once and tried to re-use a test strip. I got an E-"something" error message with that mistake. I knew test strips should only be used once, but I accidentally picked up a used strip and inserted it. Like I said, just a thought.
