Just disgusting down there and right next to the furnace. If I feel like taking a 30 minute shower how do these poor cats feel about using a gas station bathroom? Hard to keep up. As for dust control I use a squirt bottle set on mist while trying not to make the litter wet. Anyone got a better idea? All the windows open now and a fan on in the basement. Yech!

Why so many boxes? I have 5 cats, had 6, but only one box. They all use it, no problems. It's actually a med sized plastic tote that I cut a notch out of the side for entry/exit. Works great. Also I use Dr Elsey's precious cat litter, very low dust. I get that from chewy.com.

I have 1 upstairs and 6 downstairs. 4 cats. I have them all spread out. I have the Arm & Hammer clumping. I sweep each day and clean every day.

I don't know how to keep the dust down.....

Have you looked into the breeze system?
IT's basically a litter box with pebble like things on the top. In the bottom there's a removable tray that you put liners in. It's a little pricey to get started but I had enough of the litter being thrown everywhere and the dust.
Also makes it easy to test for ketones :)

Regardless of the wonderful claims by almost every litter company, I have yet to find one that isn't dusty other than paper. I have 2 cats with asthma - I tried almost every one that my local stores carry trying to cut down on the dust for them, all still gave off dust. We ended up using large high powered air filter to trap as much as possible.

I use Worlds Best Cat Litter and i don't have any issues with litter dust .. its on the expensive side but with 7 cats and 8 Litter boxes ( i use 66 qt plastic storage totes for litter boxes as mine like to throw the litter outside the normal cat litter boxes) its well worth the money as i don't need to buy multiple boxes of litter every week .. each tote will hold 28 lbs of litter and WBCL lasts a long time, i only need to replace a little at a time, adding 1/4 of a 28 lb bag every couple of days just to replace what i have scooped out and its flushable too. I have 1 box per cat plus 1 extra as was recommended by my vet, my sugar cat and 2 others wont use the litter box if someone has used it before they have, so multiple litter boxes in my house is needed.

Why so many boxes? .
Because "They" say (who ever they are) to have 1 more box than cats. I don't care about rules, there's no air circulation down there (modern home) and the minute I clean the little vandals make a big mess. Guess I'm just frustrated because that's my job, CJ's got a bad back and if I let it slide it's poo city. And... today was metal putty knife scrape-the-poo day. Tomorrow I have to mop and that's putrid.

I use Arm&Hammer lightweight, it has very little dust. My late diabetic cat Shanti had asthma and I wanted to keep things as dust free as possible. I also use an air cleaner in the room where my litter box is. Now that there is only one cat I only have one box, when Shanti was alive we had two.

try WBCL even if its only in 1 box .. you will never ever have to use the metal putty knife ever again on that box .. Wal Mart sells the red multi cat 14 lb bag for about 15 bucks, if your local store carries the WBCL in the purple bag, that is the multi cat lavender scented which to me works a little better on odor, stay away from the pine scented as it doesn't do well for odor control at all .. i just use the red or purple multi cat bags instead and my cats love it.

The putty knife is for when I find a puke or poo off in the far corners. I'm glad we got this stupid-big-house for cheap but it's typical Canadian suburb, 3 times as big as 2 people need, they don't build bungalows anymore, the basement windows are so small it looks like solitary down there. I need to make a trip to the dump and clear some room, who needs a VCR or slide projector?

Re - # of litter boxes. I've always followed that 'they' rule of 1 box per cat plus 1 extra. We have 3 large boy kitties with medical issues in the main part of the house. About a year ago, Dakota began to lose his night vision. He began peein in a hall corner as he couldn't see to get to the boxes at the other end of the house. When I realized it, I put a single box under their laying desk at the nighttime sleeping area. Now all 3 of them use that 1 litter box - I rarely ever have to clean the others but that one, I need a 55 gallon drum.... :) I'm not followin' that rule anymore...

I use 5 large, under-bed, storage boxes for litter pans for my 4 cats. I use Okocat Natural Wood Clumping litter, it's not cheap but it lasts a long time, controls odor well, is not dusty and does not track. My cats all love to get in my bed and any litter that tracks ends up in my bed, yuck, plus it turns the bed into a gravel pit! Okocat doesn't do that.

When we had Kobiashi the 28 pound monster cat we had a giant Rubber Maid on a shelf I built halfway down the basement stairs because he had arthritis. If women don't find you handsome they should at least find you handy!
