I have spent hours trying to find the answer to this question and there doesn't seem to be a solid answer.

Please, can someone help me figure out when I'm supposed to feed my cat after shooting? My vet's assistant states 1 hour, the web has NO answers, and people in this group are saying anywhere from immediately to 15 minutes to 30 minutes.

I'm starting Lantus for the first time tomorrow. And yes, I've scoured both Lantus boards.

Ugh. Please help!

You want to make sure your cat is going to eat when you give insulin so many people test-feed-shoot. Some people feed WHILE shooting as a distraction. Because I know Smokey will eat and it is an ingrained habit for all of our cats now, we test-shoot-feed, all in an immediate order.

Lantus's general pattern is to take 1-2 hours before its effects are on board so that may be why the vet assistant says to wait 1 hr - so that the insulin is revving up when the food hits, but if your cat won't eat then, you are in trouble because you can't take that insulin back out. Other insulins it is an absolute must to feed at leat a half hour before because of how hard they hit.

Test, feed, shoot.

The food may be left down between shots

Some folks will put it out in mini meals, partially frozen, or use a timed feeder so it will be consumed somewhat evenly over 10 hours.

Pick it up about 2 hours before testing so the test doesn't reflect a food elevated value.

Thanks for the information, Deanie, Melanie and BJM.

I sort of switched the order too - vet assistant said to shoot an hour after eating, not the other way around. Sorry about that.

And, darn it, Deanie, the video link states the video is private. I really wanted to see what it had to say. Phooey.

Anyway, thanks again. It's making a bit more sense now.
