Hello, what’s the best dry food for a diabetic cat?
I saw online Tiki Cat high protein dry food has 43% of protein and Orijen has something similar. Are those good options? Or something else? thanks in advance

Hi.

There are only 2 low carb kibble that the group recommends. They are Young Again and Dr. Elsey's. 10% carbs or less is considered low carb. Dr. Elsey's are all under 8%, with chicken being 2.48% and salmon being 1.82%. The other flavors are often out of stock. You can order through Chewy.

I'm not sure about the exact carb % for Young Again, I just know it is below 10%. You order this directly from them.

Neither food is inexpensive. Almost all other kibble, even prescription food from the vet that is supposed to be diabetic food, is over 20% carbs. Some kibble is even 30-40%. Because cats are obligatory hunters, carbs aren't essential for them. Their nutritional needs are met by eating a diet that consists of animal-based proteins. This is why it is important to feed all cats low carb, but it is imperative for diabetic cats.

We have a food chart, but it only list canned foods.

Hope this helps. Happy Holidays.

Other options for cats who like some crunch is to try air dried (Ziwipeak for example), or some of the freeze dried raw products.
