Can someone explain to me what is so bad about feeding our babies dry food? I'm feeding Lexi wet food 3 times a day, but she cries & cries if there's no dry food down.

Most dry food is very high in carbs, like 30% and more calories from carbs compared with less than 10% for canned.
Also, dry food is like candy and cats want their "candy".

The information below is from www.catinfo.org. This will tell you why dry food is bad.
******************************
Putting a little thought into what you feed your cat(s) can pay big dividends over their lifetime and very possibly help them avoid serious, painful, and costly illnesses. An increasing number of nutrition-savvy veterinarians, including board-certified veterinary internists, are now strongly recommending the feeding of canned food instead of dry kibble.

The three key negative issues associated with dry food are:

1) water content is too low

2) carbohydrate load is too high

3) type of protein - too high in plant-based versus animal-based proteins

In addition, dry food is very heavily processed which includes being subjected to high temperatures for a long time resulting in alteration and destruction of nutrients.

Dry food is also often contaminated with bacteria, fungal mycotoxins, storage mites/cockroaches and their feces, etc.

Most people who are concerned about their own nutrition have heard nutritionists say "shop the perimeter of the grocery store." This statement refers to the push to get humans to focus on fresh food - not overly processed food found in boxes and cans.

Where do you think kibble would reside in this scenario? Definitely not in the "perimeter"! There is nothing fresh about this source of food and it certainly does not come close to resembling a bird or a mouse.

Also keep in mind that dry foods are not refrigerated and they sit in warm warehouses, on pet store shelves, and in your cupboards for weeks or months before your pets consume them. Fats can easily become rancid, and bacteria will proliferate, in this type of environment.

There is no doubt that dry food is responsible for far more intestinal problems, and other diseases, than most veterinarians and cat owners realize.

It is sometimes hard to get a "dry food addict" off since the dry food companies spray an animal enzyme on the kibble which makes it like "heroin" to them. May I suggest that if you can't transition to wet, you could try Young Again dry food which is approximately 4%. That is how I got my two cats off the "crack" I feed mostly from this foodchart keeping their carbs under 10% is recommended although I keep mine around 4%. The carb column is the 3rd from the left. The Young Again can be ordered on line with free shipping. The website is youngagainpetfood.com I hope this helps you.

Wow, thanks so much!!! I didn't really realize why it was so bad! I've never really heard of Young Again, or if it's available in Canada. I'll have to do some research on that one!

Hey Trish, just remember that Young Again is dry and everything that www.catinfo.org says about dry pertains to Young Again too because it is a dry food i.e. no moisture, fats rancid, bacteria exists. not fresh, low on nutrition, etc. If you have already transitioned your cats to wet, I would suggest to continue with that plan instead of re-introducing the dry again.

Yes, Cindi is right. I should have explained how I transitioned my cats to eat wet with the Young Again. First, I just gave them the YA and they LOVED it. After about 10 days to 2 weeks or so, I start grinding the YA up in my magic bullet and sprinkling it over the wet food so they would want to eat the wet with the same enthusiastic way they ate the dry. Then after less than bag's worth of YA, I stopped it all together as they were both eating just the wet .
