Dry food recommendations

Zoe is newly diagnosed and really likes kibble. If she doesn’t eat she can’t have her insulin. I’m trying to transition her to wet only but we have to get there.
Any recommendations on dry food? She is eating Royal Canin babycat but come to find out it’s extremely high in cards. My vet isn’t very helpful. She advised me the food I’m feeding her is fine.
 
Dry food is really not good for them. It would be better if you could get Zoe transitioned over to an all a low carb wet diet. You will need to be very careful as removing a high carb dry food can significantly bring the BG down. If you look at Jerry's SS you will see how much removing dry food affected his numbers. I did it the wrong way..There are posts on here about transitioning that you may find useful. I'll have a look and let you know.
 
Wet food is definitely better for your kitty, but there are two dry foods that are okay for diabetic cats: Dr. Elseys clean protein and Young Again. However, I believe they are both pretty pricey and they can cause stomach issues in some cats. If you search those names on the forum, you’ll find several other threads about them that may be helpful

Thank you I will look so I do it right. Right now I feel like I’m doing everything wrong. The vet put her on 2 units twice a day. Come to find out that’s a high starting dose and now the food the vet said is ok isn’t. I’m very overwhelmed
 
Oh I understand completely that feeling. We've all been there. Take it one step at a time. This is a great place to be and in a short while you will feel like you have a bit more control. The learning curve for FD is steep but you'll get there with a little help from your friends here.

Hi Katrina I give my cat Fancy Feast Classic Chicken Pate.
One in a while if he wants dry food I will give him Dr Elsey's Clean Protein Chicken flavor. It Is expensive a 2 lb bag is 14.69 plus shipping. I only give it to my cat once and awhile, only about 15-20 pieces. Not every day. But like everyone says he should be on wet low carb food. Good luck

Thanks Diane. I ordered the Dr Elsey’s and will have it tomorrow. I realize the wet is best but Zoe has a hard time eating it because of her stomatitis. I think the dry food she mainly swallows. It is a work in process until her mouth is better. It’s a mild case and has already improved.

They are very small in size. I hope her mouth gets better soon. Zoe is such a cutie
 
I know how frustrating the food situation can be. I was still feeding my cat primarily dry food until I discovered she loved the Hill's prescription m/d food. It was definitely better than premium dry food and her BG zoomed way down overnight! You can only solve one problem at a time. Dealing with diabetes is a marathon, not a sprint. One thing at a time. I think home testing should be on your todo list before you attempt to switch to wet food. If Zoe's BG levels decrease from change in food, the 2 units of insulin could send her BG too low.

There's a Lantus specific forum and you might want to post there for insulin specific questions. The main forum has a larger audience, so general questions are good here.
 
Thank you. It’s extremely overwhelming. I have other cats and now want to get them off dry. I don’t want them to end up with diabetes. I am trying to tackle too many things at one time. I’m definitely home checking Zoe. I have a alphatrak 2. I ordered dr Elsey’s. If she doesn’t like that I’ll try the Hills next.
I’m still trying to figure out the forum. I will post on the Lantus forum.

As much as everyone is against dry food, my cat Buddy eats mainly Dr. Esley's dry chicken flavor, I ordered recently Dr. Esley's wet chicken flavor. The 1st day he did great with the wet, after that not so good.
