Dropped Lantus Vial

nailbite_smile Morning Everyone! Earlier today I was testing Sabrina & my vial of Lantus fell & & hit the tile floor.....needless to say no more & my pharmacy is closed on Sundays. What is the best way to manage her food intake til then(only been on insulin for 5 days) I'm assuming her shed has not built up as of today? Should I put off doing the curve closer to the 2 week mark? All stupidity on my part!!!! Any suggestions appreciated! Cindy & Sabrina grr_red

Sucks!!!! The shed takes a few days to build up so it might help a bit through some of today, but you will probably see wonky numbers for a few days after that. I would still do spot checks, and of course preshot tests though, but leave the curve for maybe 3 days after she is back on the insulin.

Few suggestions for future..

2. Or buy the solostar pens instead. You get a pack of 5 (3*5ml) instead of the 10ml vial. They are plastic so won't break easy and even if you did drop one and it did break you still have the others, and bonus is that you don't have to worry about expiry since you only open one at a time. You don't need the needle tips for them, they have the same rubber top as the vial so you can insert the needle in that. They are more expensive but you get more insulin.

Is there an after hours number for your vet? If so, can the vet call in a prescription to a different pharmacy?

The insulin depot can be "filled" in as few as 5 days. We usually think in terms of 5 - 7 days for the depot to be formed. (BTW, you may want to use the term "depot" since your vet won't have a clue what you're talking about if you mention a "shed." Shed is outdated slang from the Lantus board and isn't pharmacologically correct. Lantus is one of any number of drugs that are considered depot-type medications.)
