Scratchie'smom

Stupid question. Since Scratchie started wet food (Authority brand) on July 14-15, he has not been drinking any water from his bowl. I've thought that strange since he's always been a huge water drinker even before the diagnosis. Last night he was so active, alive, looked great, acted great (we had company too) and both my husband and I were shocked to watch him walk over to his water dish and take a couple of laps. Not a lot, not excessive by any means but something he hasn't done in a while. Is this good or bad?? Again, not a lot, just a few laps then he was done. I guess it just shocked me so wondered if he is ok. BG this morning 30 minutes after eating - AMPS was 316. Gave .5u of insulin at 5:00. His numbers are slowly going down.......

Any comments??

Drinking some water is normal; drinking excessively is not. I believe I read that 2 to 4 oz in a 24 hour period is considered in the normal range for cats eating wet food (so about 1/2 cup or less). Cats eating dry food will drink roughly twice that much. So just keep an eye on the water consumption and on Scratchie's BG numbers to make sure they aren't running too high as he may need a dosage adjustment. Once you are able to get a few mid-cycle numbers, then you'll have a better idea if Scratchie needs to go up or down on his dose (and the more experienced members can help you determine what that should be, whenever you are ready). :) PS: There are no stupid questions. :)

Ok good. I was hoping that was ok. Planning on a mini curve or whatever I can get this weekend.
Have a great day!

Hi,
Water consumption will drop with the change to wet food.
You can add a little to the wet food to make it more soupy if you are concerned about getting enough.
It also helps the food last a little longer if it's not all eaten when served.

Oh I know just how you feel. Maui used to drink water like crazy, she would even lick the condensation off my glass. Once she ate wet food only, she never looked at my water glass or her water dish again.

Then one day after she was in remission, I saw her drink from the water dish and thought, oh no, what's that about. I immediately tested her and she was well within normal range. So, I chalked it up to sometimes one is just thirsty and wants a drink.

She has done it a couple more times since, but it is such a rarity that she seeks out water. Of course I do add 1 full can of water to her food, so she really never needs to seek it out.
