I have a 12yr old Maine coon mix. We are in out fourth year of diabetes and we went from Prozinc to Lantus in april. Thursday we went in for our weekly vet visit( he has heart failure ) OUr vet wanted to check his BG, this was 2 hours before his evening meal and shot) it was 79. He normally gets 2.5 units and our vet recommended giving 1 unit if his number goes up near meal time. He was at 155 that evening soI gave him 1 unit. Our vet said to give 2 units from now on, if his pre-meal numbers stay over 200.
Friday 6am 359...gave 2 units
6pm 266...gave 2 units
Saturday 6am 341...2 units
6pm 202...2 units
Sunday 6am 130...gave 1 unit
2pm 374
6pm 297...2 units
We feed Fancey Feast Classic wet as his full meal and he gets a spoonful twice a day as a snack whenhe gets his Lasix(diaretic for CHF) my vet and I both use the alphatrak meter and we have made sure they read the same.
I just read about how to properly use Lantus and watched the video...I had been using it the same as we used Prozinc.
Since we changed his dose from 2.5units to 2units, and I have given his less then that twice in the last few days I do not think a curve would tell us anything at this point, but I am wondering about how to keep him from a diabetic crisis. Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.
