Hi all - I’m writing because I’m confused on what to do for my sugar kitty. She was on 3 units of Vetsulin once a day but her sugars were going up in the evening so the vet moved her to 3 units of Vetsulin twice a day and I thought everything was fine but I periodically check her sugars and they were running on the lower end so I called her vet to discuss it. The vet told me to stop the insulin completely, check it weekly and call them if it went below 50 or above 200. Well I didn’t trust that and I checked it before bed and it was 206 then the next morning it was 224 (no insulin). I called the vet back and she said to go ahead and do 1 unit twice daily now. Fast forward to this morning before food it was 160. I feel like that is just too low to give her insulin so I didn’t...am I correct? Now I’m beginning to think she’s been having too much insulin and I’m just not sure what to do anymore. I feel like the vet truly doesn’t know what to do and she’s just throwing out random ideas. I don’t want something to happen to my kitty. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! *Note - she’s been on the low carb wet food diet!

I posted this on Facebook and now I’m here. She did eat and now her BG is 210. Would you suggest giving the 1 unit of insulin?

I think it was wise to skip insulin at a BGL of 160. It's hard to give dosing advice without more data. Since her BGL is above 200, you can absolutely give her an injection. If you feel comfortable trying it, maybe do a half dose. .5 of a unit, twice a day for now. She still needs insulin at those levels, but it looks like the diet change has helped, and she's working on trying to make her own insulin.

Vets often don't know feline diabetes well, but there are members here that do. To get the best advice, tailored specifically for your baby, please take a look at New? How you can help us help you!

Thank you for your reply! I greatly appreciate it.

Hi Paige,

Would you please give us a bit more background. Such as the meter you use for testing, the DX: (diagnosis date). when the insulin was started.
Was she started at the 3U dose?
Has she been on other insulins? (You've been a member here on the message board since Jun 1, 2018 according to the information beneath your avatar.)

Putting that type of information in your User Profile "signature" means it would be at out fingertips, as it would show up at the end of each of your posts.

Do you have a spreadsheet?

Much easier for us to help people when they have a spreadsheet. Most folks from the facebook group do have a spreadsheet.

Take Chris R. up on her offer to set the SS up for you. Takes her about 30 seconds.
Then, link the SS here on the message board, into your signature.

p.s. Found you in our facebook group.

Hi! I’m using a ReliOn human meter, she was diagnosed 4-6-2018, I don’t remember the dose she started at (we were with a different vet), she’s only been on Vetsulin! I will work on updating my signature and start the spreadsheet ASAP! Thank you for the tips.

So that diagnosis date tells us that she is a long-term diabetic, diagnosed more than 1 year ago.

Looking forward to your signature. Then we will know your girl kitty's name. Think you forgot to tell us here what that is - yet.;)

Signature instructions.

Go to the top right corner of the screen, click on your user name, a drop down list will appear, select "Signature" from that list. Start typing in the text box that appears and be sure to click on the "Save Changes" button at the end of the text box.

Information like your first name, your cat's name age and sex, DX: (diagnosis date), insulin used, meter used (when you get one), food fed, and then the SS (spreadsheet) link when you get that setup are so, so helpful to those of us responding to members. That signature information will be "magically" attached at the end of all your posts. Signature and other user profile information can be updated as needed.

While you are there, editing your user profile, if you could update your profile to include your location, that is helpful also.

Looking forward to learning your cats name.
