Dosing question

I am preparing for another surgical procedure. My friend will stay with Lucy but she can't do home glucose testing. I am thinking either 2 units once a day for only a couple of days which is what we did last time or between 1 and 1.5 units twice a day. I should be home the same day but I am preparing for all possibilities and if I have to stay longer the vet will come and give Lucy her insulin so that is why I am considering a once a day dose. Thank you for any opinions or suggestions.

I think if it were me, I would do a bcs ( big chicken shot) of 1 unit... with no one able to test.
It sounds like you have enough going on that you need to be able to not worry about Lucy.

1 unit is pretty easy to measure so the likelihood of a measurement mistake is reduced. And if Lucy decides not to eat... that can affect bg too.

Thank you so much Rhiannon. That is a good point too about the possibility of reduced appetite. I never thought of that because Lucy loves her food. :cat::) Hopefully it will all work out well like last time where I was able to come home the same day. It is minor surgery which is necessary and ongoing to managing my issues but with a general anesthetic I always get a bit anxious so I like to prepare for all possibilities to ensure that my Lucy is as safe as can be. Thank you again.
 
mine used to have a decent appetite..... but she always ate less when I was away and someone else was feeding her.
And she won't eat a bite if she's left at the vets.

My Lucy polished off her plate of food at the vet within an hour of a general anesthetic and having two teeth out too. :cat::) But when my friend stays with Lucy when I go to hospital then Lucy seems to stay mostly in the bedroom and doesn't ask my friend for food very much like she does with me and if someone else gives her food she waits until they are gone before she eats it. So actually your point is an excellent one because it is possible that Lucy doesn't eat as much when someone else is feeding her though if I leave food out when I am going out she eats very well then. I think though that if Lucy stayed at the vet without having had sedation to relax her such as after an anesthetic then she may not each much in that situation. So it seems that your Shadow is the same too.
 
I think I'd consider 1.5u twice a day. That's still 25% less than her current dose, which is just getting her into blue numbers right now. if your friend finds that Lucy isn't eating, then she could decrease to 1.0u.

Thank you Julie. That sounds like a good plan too.
 
When I have my cat sitter taking care of Gabby, I typically reduce the dose. (Gabby won't let anyone else test her.) The suggestion to drop the dose to 1.5u twice a day strikes me as safer than 2.0u once a day.

I hope you have a speedy recovery. Please let your friend who will be caring for Lucy know she can contact us if she has any questions.

Thank you so much Sienne. The once a day option was in case the vet and my sister couldn't come twice a day. I agree a lower dose twice a day would be better for sure. If only one dose a day is given I will make that 1.5 units. I will tell my friend and my sister to post to the board if they need help or support. Thank you again.
 
Thank you everyone. I had my surgery yesterday and was able to come home the same day. My friend drove me home and stayed the night so Lucy only missed yesterday's morning insulin dose. Lucy's glucose was high last night after the skipped morning dose but it is lowering again today so we will get back on track soon. Thank you again for your good wishes and support and suggestions.

yes, Lucy will get right back to business. It's no different than a fur shot.... which we all do.

So glad you got to come home the same day, voula. At least in the US, hospitals are not places you want to linger any longer than necessary. Take it easy and let Lucy take care of you! ;)

She'll recover soon from the interruption. You've got a good friend there - she sounds like a gem.
 
Hi Voula, sorry I missed wishing you well before your surgery. But I am very pleased to see you are home safe and sound again and I am sure are very relieved it is over for at least a while.
Lucy will be very happy to have you home again although I am sure she was well liked after.

Gosh I'm sorry I did not see this earlier either, glad your surgery went well and that you could go home where you can rest much better! :bighug::bighug: Sounds lke your friend is worth her weight in gold!!
 
Thank you everyone for your good wishes. Yes my friend is a wonderful friend. My recovery has been more difficult this time so I have been resting a lot and having lots of sleep. I don't seem to have bounced back as quickly this time. I have had so many of these surgeries I have truly lost count and sometimes they seem easier to get over and sometimes I feel so tired. Thank you again.
