I was told that you don't shot below 200 I believe the protocol for prozinc says wait 20 minutes test and if the number is going up and above 200 feed and shoot.
If you have time please wait for Sue or Rachel or post on the health forum.
I'm new and dosing Fritz with Prozinc. I don't want to mislead you.
Please read Portocol for Prozinc Good luck!

@DebG Thanks, Deb - Good eye! (This is a continuation of Nancy's earlier thread ... so we'd decided on that one that she should skip tonight.)

Good call! No shot under 200 is good. Especially with him being so new on the insulin and having such low numbers already. :)

Mr. Black's number this morning is 254. Should we shoot? Note that I won't be home mid-day to monitor him. Will be leaving in 1-1/2 hours and return around 4 p.m.

I would be inclined to lower his dose, if you can't be around to monitor - as you can always increase it again later. I'm thinking perhaps between 1.25 & 1.5U. Let's see what Sue thinks about this, if she's around ... @Sue and Oliver (GA)

My gut says that because he dropped to 53 last night, that's close enough to earn a reduction. If you're really worried about not being home to monitor, you could just shave today's dose down to 1.0U (a little more than half of what he got last night) - just to be extra-cautious. (That's what I'd be inclined to do if he were mine ...) Always better to err on the side of caution ... and I'd get a test in right before you leave today, too - just to get an idea of how he's doing, as you could always leave a little bit of food out then, too. While lowering the dose that much could result in a higher PMPS #, again - is better to play it safe.

Hi, Just to reiterate, Mr. Black had NO shot last night, and his number of 53 was mid-day yesterday, not last night. His number last night was 142. So we go ahead with 1 unit then?

Yes, I would do the 1.0U today. (Sorry, I meant yesterday's daytime cycle when I wrote that about the BG drop. Need. More. Coffee.:coffee::coffee::coffee:;))

I just tested Mr. Black again, and his number is at 155 at +3. This morning it was 254, went down 100 pts. already. I have to go out for a few hours, but I'm wondering if I should cancel my plans and stick around to monitor him at mid-cycle?

That was a big drop. Can you give him a snack and retest in 20 minutes to see if that helped him come up? The number isn't too low but, it is early in the cycle and you won't be home for a bit. The test after a snack might help you decide if you need to cancel your plans.

Tough call there, Nancy ... but in this situation, I'd probably cancel my plans. (You know, if it's not something like having to go out and perform emergency brain surgery on somebody. 'Cause I'd rather see what kitty's #s are. And what's the point in being somewhere, if you'll spend all your time worrying, right?)

Yea, better safe than sorry. However, I just used my last lancet! I can get to Walmart and back within an hour. If you really think I shouldn't go, then I'll use the last lancet - I have some alcohol I can use on it.

I'd probably give him a small dollop of canned, then go to Walmart. (He should be alright for that long, I would think, with a little bit of food on board. But don't overfeed, ok?)

Mr. Black just pooped and it's normal looking EXCEPT it is close to being black in color. Does anyone know what this could be from? Otherwise, he's spunky and bright-eyed.

Sometimes their poop is just blacker than at other times... I wouldn't worry unless it starts becoming both black & tarry (you know, like a gooey consistency). Sounds like he's feeling fine ...

83 tonight! 36 hours with no insulin! Has it ever happened where a cat recently on insulin can still go hypo on his own?

If he hasn't had insulin in 24 hours, he is safe in low numbers. Those numbers are just normal numbers that aren't affected by insulin.
