Thor is 6 an just diagnosed.
We were in the emergency hospital for five days with pancreatitis and diagnosed with diabetes. They prescribed him diabetic food, and one unit every 12 hours of Lantis insulin.

We were told to feed test blood glucose, and then insulin
So here’s my issue I am worried about the number is going too low here my tester in Canada his number should be between six and 12

I fed him 75 g of DM cat food 20 minutes later we tested blood glucose and it was 6.9

6.0 or lower I’m to take him back to the hospital.

So now I’m super stressed out I’ve skipped his insulin shot this morning and not sure if I did the right thing

Any suggestions anyone else go through this? I’m sure everyone has at some point.

I hope this gets easier

Welcome to FDMB
It is overwhelming to know your loved fur baby is diagnosed with FD, the good news is that it is manageable, here are so some notes:
1- You have a good insulin, Lantus and ProZinc are a 12-hoiur inulin gentle on a cat's system.
2- The "Prescribed diabetic food" you were told to feed is not good for a diabetic cat, there's no such thing first, these foods contain between 20-30% carbs, and diabetic cats need to have a diet of wet can or raw foods between 0-10% carbs, (Dry Matter carbs )they should have a feeding schedule, so no grazing, no dry foods, and should feed 3-4 times during the day besides the two main meals before each shot, when transitioning from high carbs to low carbs it needs to be a slow process, you do not want to upset the stomach, as well as the low carbs can dive down the glucose levels, so testing during this cycle every 3 hours is important.
3- Home Testing; The protocol is TEST-FEED-SHOOT, your cat should not have any food 2 hours prior to shot, as well as testing 3-4 times during the day Lantus is a Depot insulin and food keeps the insulin in check, what meter are you using to test? you do not need a pet meter, most members use a human meter is just as accurate and inexpensive. Many members also use the CGM LIBRE by ABBOTT, is a continuous sensor attached to your cat, read on your phone.
A non-diabetic glucose level is between 50-120, being a newbie, y should start on a low dose, every cat is deferent and reacts differently to insulin, it takes about 3 cycles (3 days) to see results on the dose giving, there are situations that you do not dose, but it is always good not to skip a dose.

Sorry I sent a reply by email

Test feed shoot
What if his level is only 6.9 . Our range is 6-12. I am worried he goes to low . They said below 6 to bring him back to the vet hospital.

We live in BC canada

Could you please create the spreadsheet so we can guide you better? You don’t need to take him to the vet if he’s glucose level is low,, if you don’t t feel comfortable with the number he has before shot, let me tag a member that can assist you with dosing
