Dose then Leaving the House

Hi all!

We are less than a week on insulin and we are nervous about leaving the house at the same time. Luckily my husband works at home so we have had one person monitoring at all times, but that might soon change. How does one get through dosing insulin in the am and then go out to work all day? If we leave some food out, will a hypo kitty go and feed on its own? I think I might worry all day :sad:

We find ourselves looking over at him every few minutes...lol. I hope it gets a bit easier once we have more of a pattern.

Yes, most cats when going low, will search out food and eat just fine.

Quick question: you are using Lantus insulin? I ask because on your spreadsheet, it looks like you are dosing 1u at am and 2u at pm shot? It is better to keep the same dose constant and change it only if needed to adjust, and based the numbers at nadir, the lowest point in mid cycle.

From your numbers, it looks like 1u is not enough and 2u is too much, so why not go with 1.5u

What kind of insulin are you giving to your cat?
How many times a day will you be able to feed your cat?
Does your cat have a good appetite when it's time for him to eat?
And will you still have enough time for a preshot and/or +1 after shot ?

HI Tanya, you don't mention if you've done a blood glucose curve. Home testing & curves are the best way to prevent hypo's from occurring. A curve is taking blood glucose testing in 3 or 4 hour increments. So you take the am reading, feed, shoot - then 3 hours later do another glucose reading, then 3 more hours a 3rd reading, etc until you get to +12 and time for the next shot. This way you know exactly how your cat is reacting to the insulin and if the amount your giving is safe. Jan
