Buddy's #'s getting worse...going mostly pink now  Feel like i need to adjust dose.
last post suggested i go down , not up, but when he was at 1 u he was still high, which is why we increased.
could he be reacting to the new vial opened yesterday? should i wait some more, or adjust dose down to 1 u again?
thanks very much.

Wondering why you started a new vial? Last one was started just a month ago. I know you aren't using it up. And are you using a vial or a cartridge?

I do decrease the first shot or two "just in case", but I think its the old fast acting insulin habit more than anything. I have not seen any difference in numbers on a new cart of lev and I use mine to the last drop - takes six months.

As for the dose, that's a tough call. He was dropping pretty low on 1.3u. While it is possible that 1.25u is the dose, it could also be 1.1u. You could raise it to 1.25 and see if the numbers get better and then if he drops low on it, go the other way and try 1.1u

I would hold the dose. See how low he goes.

So, why are you starting a new cart? Lev will last, refrigerated, until it is gone. It is recommended to not put it in the door where it gets jostled a lot, and no where it can get frozen (like right under the cold air vent). The longevity is what makes lev so cost effective.

previously i was told here to start a new one when i get down to the green lines.
i do make sure its at 40 degrees always.used to keep it for 2-3 months, now its every 5 weeks, guess i dont have to do that? thought it loses its spunk after a month or so. not sure if i use vial or carts-comes in a 5 pak, says" penfill "on box.

Hi Marci,

If stored properly- and it sounds like it is at your place, Lev is good to the last drop!

All of our SS's ( except mine and Pamela's 'cuz we have not updated :? ) reflect that, and I can speak to mine, I use to last drop and see NO difference whatever in BG's....

And, the dose...yeah...I would hold it, too! I like the green today you posted about....

Patience, Grasshopper... ;-)

If you or Buddy have issues with the highs to lows gap, you can always dose a titch less ( like .1 or .05) to lower the gap between the highs and lows....that is what I do with my PK. He does NOT do the swings well at all, but if I keep him between 100 and 300, he does purrfect!

I realize it is higher than ideal and most folks shoot for OTJ or at least tight regulation, but my Pauly won't do any such thing...he is a much happier cat on a higher but shallow curve than on a swinging curve.

Seems like the higher but shallow curve gives his body the time, predictability and gentless it needs to get lower doses on its own...like he just lived on .4 for like 4 months and now suddenly he needed a 50% dose reduction to get out of the swings....He now gets .2u and that is keeping him between 70 and 300 right now...still too much swing for us but we are working on it.

But's that us...I just wanted to put that out there.

Not sure why the "Levemir needs replaced after 42 days" insert info or other short term use info keeps plaguing us.

To clarify: the information written in the insert pertains to human use and humans use the pens differently than we do for cats. The whole concept of the pen was to allow humans to use room temperature insulin, so it makes sense that it should have a reasonable expiration. Humans use a pen up before 42 days anyway. If you're using a vial, I'm not sure what the recommendation is for storage other than refrigeration. I tossed the only vial of Levemir I've ever used after about 3 months, when I probably could have continued using it for 6. I wasted at least 7ml of insulin. But I didn't know better.

Lev seems to be exceptionally hardy stuff. None of us here have ever had a pen go "bad." One member on the board, dian and wheezer, uses a pen for at least 6 months 'cause he's on such a low dose.

Common sense care is important - refrigerate, prevent from light, don't leave in the door or cold section of frig, etc. but I had left my last pen out on the table at least 3 times for at least 12 hours a time and it was good till I could get not another unit out of it. I used to toss them when it got past the 12U mark, but this one I kept using. I will also vouch for its efficacy to the last drop!

Just another reason we all like to brag about Levemir!
