Have you had a chance to look over the dosing methods for Lantus? There are 2 approaches to dosing -- Tight Regulation (TR) vs Start Low Go Slow (SLGS). TR is a bit more aggressive and allows you to change the dose after 3 days/6 cycles. SLGS has you evaluate the dose after a week. Theodore is in the middle of the amount of time a dose is held depending on the dosing method. The good news is that you're testing enough to use either method. However, with TR, you can't be feeding your cat any dry food and it looks like you may be using Dr. Elsey's. If that's still the case, you would need to be using SLGS and you would hold the dose for a bit longer.

Thank you for the explanation. Yes he's on Dr. Esleys. We've had so many issues when we completely remove the dry (megacolon flare ups) that's why we live a little in. 80% of his food is wet. He just gets a table spoon of dry twice a day to help with his poop. Doing the curve as I go for Theodore today.

Is giving several meals throughout the day bad? I noticed my cats levels go up a lot when he's hungry. They actually go down after eating, it's not what's supposed to happen according to what I read

A cat's numbers can go down if the cat's pancreas is working -- or starting to work. If the pancreas is able to manufacture insulin, the endogenous insulin helps to transport the glucose from food being metabolized into the cells. As a result, there's less glucose in the blood and numbers can drop. You may see someone suggest that it can be helpful to feed a cat at around +9 as a means of getting the pre-shot numbers to drop in response to a cat's pancreas "waking up."

Several meals a day vs two large meals puts less pressure on the pancreas. You may have read a diet recommendation to eat several small meals a day as a means of keeping your metabolism revved up. It's the same idea. Eating small meals means the pancreas is working less hard all at one time.

Great explanation. Thank you for that. I just had my specialist appointment this morning (EST) and they advised me to bump it up to 2.5 units, specialist says to allow him to eat throughout the day as he's on Lantus anyway. So I did allow him to eat when we got home. I think it's going to take a while for him to get used to eating small meals as right now he binge eats as I've been so restrictive with his diet.
