Dosage

Hi,

My cat had a lower than usual pre shot this morning (after food) so I waited an hour and gave a unit instead of the 2.5 increase (which I started yesterday) got to give insulin soon and it’s 453 which is around what it usually is before. Do I go back to the 2.5 dose?

With those high numbers (red) it definitely looks like you should give the full dose tonight. It also looks like Piggy needed more insulin this morning, so maybe don’t cut it down so low next time — you can try a little more insulin and collect numbers to see how the cycle goes. I certainly understand the anxiety of a lower than expected preshot number.
 
Also, I thought you were using ProZinc since you posted on this forum. Your cat would do better on ProZinc or Lantus. Any chance of getting the vets to switch Piggy?

Yes he’s on prozinc I’ve just noticed I haven’t changed signature, I’ve just tested before insulin and it was a really high 694, probably due to the decrease this morning?

Thanks for your help, I’ve just given him the dose of 2.5, I did two doses at that amount then saw the low pre shot (after he’d ate) then wasn’t sure what to do.

As I’m in the UK I couldn’t seem to reach anyone on here so went to a uk page which said 1 unit and listened as I didn’t have a clue what to do.

It’s all good! I hope you have a good cycle and things start improving. How long has he been on ProZinc? Wait… editing my comment… I see on your spreadsheet that he started ProZinc on March 26.

Thank you and for all your help, he’s been on prozinc for just over two weeks now, was on caninsulin before that and it wasn’t lasting long at all and then with the help on here I told the vet I wanted to change, she was very clueless about it and said to drop the dose by one unit even though numbers were still high, this made him even more hungry and still not himself etc, hence the reason I’ve been trying to up the dose by reading all what I can from here and testing as much as I can.
 
I’m very glad you have been such a great advocate for Piggy. That’s dangerous (of the vet) to drop his dose when he’s so high. I am very happy he didn’t have a DKA. Let’s see if we can get him into better numbers and feeling well!
