? Dosage question for Niki

Hi all -

Niki of course has been up and down.

The last few nights he has been in the 50s so we have been carefully testing. It seems as if he hits his nadir then slowly his BG increases.

But, we are out of town (left this morning, back late Friday) for my dad’s funeral. Our pet sitter (vet tech) knows to test before dosing, etc. and he has an automatic feeder for mid-day and late night meals. But she is not staying at our house so if he is super low she will not be there to keep testing.

my panicked question is - should we temporarily (at least until we get home) lower his dose to 1.5 units to ensure he doesn’t go hypo when the sitter is not there?

thank you for any help!

For safety, I think it is a good idea to reduce. Last time I went on vacation, I reduced a few days earlier, just to drain the depot. Since you are getting ready to leave, maybe 1u is the way to go, and it will be easier for your pet sitter to see the dose on the line anyway! You can bring him back up when you get home. Kitties can be a bit weird when their people are gone, even though you have a feeder, he may get a little picky with food while you are gone. So sorry you have lost your father, my deepest sympathies.

I'm a slow typer, I see Elise @tiffmaxee was posting too. When I looked at your SS, I had originally thought maybe 1.5u would work, but since you weren't able to drain the depot a little, you may still have some depot action next few days.

I agree Elise, I was scrolling through the SS, and pondered 1.5u, but then remembered how stressful it is to leave them. It's always better not to worry, so thinking about the reason for needing to be away, I thought if it were me, I'd reduce to 1u. I've had a "vacation dose" in play before and ended up reducing again the day before I left to a new dose, since Mav decided to give me unexpected lower numbers. I think you and I are on the same page :)

Thank you all so much. I appreciate your advice in the middle of my emotional turmoil. I am so grateful for you all and your knowledge. :-)

I will tell the pet sitter to reduce to the 1 unit twice a day. I will also tell her to not shoot at 250 or less, especially at night.

thank you also for the expressions of sympathy for my dad.

you all are so appreciated!

Just remember, when you come back, you can go back to the last good dose of 2.0 units. I think 1.5 units would have been fine, but lower is OK if you think he might be off his food while you are gone. I am assuming no history of ketones? I don't see any recent ketones testing on the spreadsheet so don't know if that was an issue in the past. The 1.0 units would be too low if any ketones have been present.

Take care, sounds like Niki will be in good hands. :bighug:
