Can anyone offer advice on dosage for MeowMeow? Even with small dosages his numbers seem to go pretty low. His behavior is normal as well as his eating and urinating. Thanks for any advice.

Hi Lisa,

Well honestly it's kind of hard to tell exactly what's going on with MeowMeow without some mid-cycle tests to see where the dose is taking him at nadir. He may still need a lower dose, and yes there are doses lower than .25u. Also since I'm not seeing it and can't access his profile, what is he eating right now? As well as was there a health problem like a UTI or bad teeth that caused you to put him back on insulin? Because it looks like he was in remission and might be trying to go back there, which is why I'm wondering about other health issues like infection or pain that might have bumped him out temporarily and if they've been addressed?

He is currently eating various Friskies canned food with low carb counts. He was in remission for 4 years. In May of this year the vet put him on antibiotics as a precaution but couldn't determine cause of any specific infection. He was feeling pretty bad in the beginning and actually appeared to have a respiratory illness. The antibiotics worked and he has been on insulin ever since. The respiratory symptoms cleared up within a few weeks . His numbers have been pretty low and I will try to get more mid cycle test.

He may be in a situation where you need to chase the numbers - maybe shoot only when he is over 200 mg/dL on a human glucometer.
And if you aren't already doing so, feed in mini-meals (a timed feeder like the Pet Safe 5may help with this) to reduce any food spikes and reduce the workload at any one time on his pancreas.

Or, maybe try Mel's trick to shoot 1 drop - push the plunger in as far as you can, relax your finger on the syringe, and whatever it draws up, if it is less than the 0.25 you've been measuring, will be a lower dose and maybe be a bit safer.

You can also try changing to an even lower carb food. I know most of the regular Friskies Pates are around 8% but the Friskies Special Diet are around 5% calories from carbs. That little difference can sometimes be the change needed. I know with Mikey, he does better on 5% or less so I stick with the Friskies SD.
