Doogle at Emergency vet...DKA

Well Doogle had to be rushed to the emergency vet hospital around 3am this morning. He was laying on the bed and I had just syringe fed him and he urinated on the bed and himself. So we tested for ketones and they were large. So we took off to the hospital. He is DKA and UTI. He will stay in the hospital for at least through the weekend and they will assess him to see what we need to do. Our hospital is only open at night so he would have to go somewhere during the day if needed. They were great! We are going to go by and see him later today and check on him. When we left, I went to say bye and he held his little head up and meowed at me. He hasnt meowed on him own this whole week. I dont think the vet was ready for me though. I asked questions about labs, knew way more than most people did. I was finishing his sentences about testing, eating, insulin, etc....LOL.

I'm so glad you thought to test for ketones. I don't know if most people would have seen peeing on the bed as an opportunity to grab a ketostix. Please keep us updated on how Doogle is doing.

Donna -- if this were me, I'd be having a serious talk with your regular vet. I'm at a loss as to why, given that Doogle was at the office for some time, that a UTI was overlooked. I know that you know that the recipe for ketones is not enough insulin, not eating, and infection. The oversight is hard on Doogle and on you.

I will do that when he gets back from vacation next week. We are about to leave, go grab dinner (Momma needs a night out to relax) and then go visit him. Luckily where we are eating is 10 minutes around the corner from the hospital. :-D I will update when I get back. Thank you to everyone here for your prayers, healing vines and wonderful kind words!!!!!
