Everyone! I'm really excited, but I don't want to get my hopes up just yet. Doober's blood sugar hasn't been high enough to give him insulin since Thursday night! Every time a randomly test him (maybe I should more?) I expect it to be high, but so far, so good!

Just a question though, because I'm not sure. How high does it need to be to shoot? I'm not comfortable unless it's over 200, but I'm not sure what the "official" number is.

Also, he got groomed yesterday. So handsome

I'd try going down to 1U though and see how he does.

It's not a good idea to "rush" a remission....we want a good strong remission, not a fast one!!

At some point, you'll need to learn to shoot lower numbers than 200 .....we usually suggest starting at 150 once you've moved to the Lantus forum and have your spreadsheet set up.

If you get a number lower than 150, you can "stall", don't feed and post for help! Test again in 20-30 minutes to see if the number is going up without food.

We have a "rule" here...if someone signs on to help you when you're shooting lower numbers, they'll stay with you as long as necessary to make sure everything's OK (or find someone else with experience to watch over you)

As long as you are home testing and have supplies like Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers, Karo/honey/syrup and plenty of test strips, there's no reason you should worry about shooting those lower numbers!

Normal is 50-120 if using a human meter. A bit higher with a pet meter, not sure but up to 150 or 170. Test a few hours after eating. It BG comes down pancreas is working. Very rare to go from 1.5 units of insulin to OTJ but hope it happens.

Thank you, Chris! I know you're happy to hear it! I'll take him down to 1U and see what happens. I'm glad to know I can shoot at 150. I googled it and found conflicting things. I will be so happy if the diet change and a short time on insulin is all my big boy needed! His personality has improved, too! He's jumping up on things, bathing himself more, and just being a bratty tomcat like he used to be lol! I didn't realize how much he had changed. I can tell he feels so much better!

I'm using a human meter. I knew 50-120 was normal, but I wasn't sure what was safe to shoot at. He's finally used to being tested, so I can do it often! I feel bad for his little ears, though. I use a pill bottle with warm water in it to heat up his ear and get blood flowing. He likes it! He closes his eyes and purrs.

Yeah, there are all kinds of crazy numbers listed online, but here, once you're home testing and doing OK, we start at 150....the sooner you can get Doober into normal numbers (and keep him there) the more his pancreas can hopefully heal!!

I remember very clearly about 2 weeks after I started China on insulin....I caught her grooming and at that moment realized it had been a LONG time since I'd seen her groom herself! I broke down and cried because I knew she had to be feeling a lot better (and I was pretty guilty over not noticing she hadn't been grooming too and knew how badly she had to have been feeling)

Soon after she started playing games she hadn't played in a long time. I had figured she was just "too old" for playing anymore, but she just felt like crud! Once she started getting what she needed, it was like she was getting shots from the Fountain of Youth instead of insulin!

Awww! I have high hopes for Doober! He's being so frisky! I just wish I could get him to sit and eat all of his food. He was good about it at first, when the wet food was new. Now, he just wants to eat for a minute. Then he gets distracted. It's like an hour long process now it's frustrating when I'm waiting to test him (like right now haha!) but look how cute he is!

You might want to take a look at other member's spreadsheets, especially where you see the pre-shot values on the board where the numbers are relatively low. For those of us who have a good deal of experience and data, we will shoot any number above 50. We all work our way down to be able to shoot that low. Lantus is not a terribly potent insulin (vs something like Novolin). When you're able to shoot lower numbers, you'll tend to see a flatter curve.
