Spot's been in the 200's and even lower. Now tonight it's 402. Any explanations? Maybe we shot into his fur? My husband wondered if we should give him another shot, but I need to sleep tonight, not test all night.

Is this just how it is on Lantus, a roller coaster?

Hi Jennifer, my guess is the 402 tonight is a bounce from the 141 this morning. Sienne provides much better explanations of bounces that I can, something about the liver reacting to unfamiliar low numbers. It can take 3 days for the bounce to clear so get a good night's sleep and be patient. That is very difficult to do.

I would not recommend another shot. You probably have given Spot the full dose and then another shot will be a second dose which could be way too much insulin.

Never, ever give a second shot. You have no idea how much insulin went in. Giving a 2nd shot could easily result in an overdose.

I think it's very likely that Spot's numbers went low last night as evidenced by your low AMPS this morning. Would it be possible for you to get a test every night before you give your 11:00 snack (or go to bed)? Getting a before bed test lets you know if you need to intervene and steer the numbers.

When Spot goes into numbers his body isn't used to, the liver overreacts. When this happens, the liver dumps a stored form of glucose, along with counterregulatory hormones into the bloodstream. This causes numbers to spike upward. As Liz noted, it can take up to 72 hours for this kind of bounce to clear.

If I've learned anything in the last few weeks it is that too much insulin can be deadly, but too little can only harm organs over time.

I'm more afraid of giving too much insulin than I am afraid of fur shots and giving too little.

Hope that helps! :)

Hi, Jennifer.

I did see that you've been testing. Of course, it's the one night that you skip that you see the blue AMPS the next day. I was just coaching that those kinds of surprises are easier to understand if you have some PM tests. FWIW, if you can try to test at different times it helps to fill out the blank spots on the SS.
