This is my first post on the message board but I joined In December. Dolly was diagnosed October 17, 2019. She is 10 1/2 years old and been on Lantus from day 1. She has been on one unit every 12 hours for most of theses 3 months. Glucose parameters given by her vet is “no insulin for 150 or under”. She had a Fructosamine test last week with “normal” results. Vet said to take her off insulin, test 1-2 times a week. I have been testing at least 2 times a day. She’s had insulin 3 times in the last few weeks, highest reading 173. She eats FF and Friskies pate. No dry food. I have kept daily records from the beginning. She was 150 this morning. Would love to hear others thoughts on her vets advice. I did want to add that Dolly has had normal drinking and urinating for months. Her diabetes probably a result of 1 injection of Depo Medrol in September. Dolly has been joyfully playing for the last week or more.

I am happy that even though you stopped insulin, the numbers seem to be holding. The thing is 150s 170s. do no damage to your cat but are still diabetic numbers and I fear that eventually you may lose control and have to start again. It can go either way but for me, being this close, I would keep shooting insulin to give the cat th best chance of remission
I do not agree at all with your vet's parameters. FWIW and I do not know if the board would agree with me as the board has it's 'own' parameters, but I have had people shoot numbers as low as 60 and in some cases even lower.
What I would do if I were you is to go to the Lantus tight regulation board and let the people there guide you as their combined experience should be able to help you
finish this.
Also, FWIW,
A fructosamine in this case is a total waste of money as it gives a 2 week or so average blood glucose numbers and an average of the numbers doesn't help you.
On a side note, isn't it great when they start playing again???

Hello and welcome to you and sweet Dolly? What type of blood glucose meter are you using? The mid 150's are better numbers on a pet meter than a human meter.

We have found that it's better to slowly reduce the dose, as long as it is safe to keep giving insulin. So we wouldn't stop at 1 unit, but rather drop it by 0.25 units at a time when numbers indicate.

I am glad to hear you have been home testing. That is what keeps Dolly safe. Do you think you'd be able to put your data into a spreadsheet? We use a common format here, and those of us who give dosing suggestions like to see the data first. Here is some more information on creating a spreadsheet.

  • Please set up a Google Spreadsheet as soon as possible. Always keep spreadsheets up-to-date! Valuable time may be lost looking for information when a spreadsheet is not up to the minute.
  • If you have not been able to transition your kitty off of DRY food yet, please note it on your spreadsheet and in your signature. A dry food diet will often require higher doses of insulin to bring numbers down. Having this information plainly visible will help us help you.

Welcome to the FDMB! Glad to see you found your way here. You did your first post correctly -Yay! There are so many helpful members here. Glad to see you have the link to create the spreadsheet. Feel free to click my sugar kitty Sir Dracula Dupree's sheet, from your facebook post it seemed your kitty was having similar numbers :)
 
Dolly is doing great. Such a joy to see our kitty playing again, not afraid to jump up on things even if it is the kitchen counter. Eating well most of the time. Hope your sweet Wink is doing well. Thanks for reaching out.

When are cats start exhibiting signs that they are getting better, it is such a relief. Improvements, more back to normal, in appetite and "The 5 P's (purring, peeing, pooping, preening, playing) lets you know that what you are doing is helping Dolly. Lifts our spirits.

We know life is busy. Between full time jobs, caring for our families and taking care of ourselves and don't know how we do it all sometimes. But we prioritize and get things done that are needed most.

When you have a chance to fill in the spreadsheet(SS), I would be interested in seeing how Dolly is doing.
When you get a chance, some information in your signature would be of help also. Info in this post to help you out.

Jumping on the counters! Wink had bad neuropathy when I first fostered and then adopted him. Got so much better with all that I learned here and he was able to walk normally again. I still remember when he first could jump again, and then started to eye jumps to the top of the 6 foot bookcases!!!
