Ooof, before we begin I need a cup 'o tea

~O)

That's better.so my cat Osi (short for Osiris, his last name is McCuddlyCuddles) licks A LOT and sometimes he doesn't ever stop licking and it makers me v worried about if he might have a serious disease. I think this disease is polio. He drinks water but sometimes not too much and I am warried his water gave him polio. I had my shots so I am not concerned about myself (also, this is the FDMB, let's stick to the cats!!)

fll_moon

^ he somtimes stares at the moon, also another reeason I think he has polio

Is there any cure for cat polio??? he also jumps from the couch to the table but misses (a symptom of polio??)

I never heard of a cat getting polio. The licking could be due to an allergy or other problem. Have you brought Osi to the vent and discussed it with your vet?

Why do you think he has polio? Because he jumps and misses?? If your cat is diabetic, he could have neuropathy, which effects the rear legs. This is from the Q&A section of feline diabetes.com:

Q7.1. My cat is walking funny / weak in the hind legs / not jumping well. Is this related?

A7.1. There is a condition common in diabetic cats called peripheral neuropathy, which causes weakness in the hind legs. Symptoms include: weak hind legs; feet slipping out from under him/her on the floor; walking down on the hocks in back and/or on the wrists in front; lying down more frequently, especially after short walks If your cat has this condition, it is a sign the cat's blood glucose is still too high, which is causing nerve damage. Improved regulation is the best way to reduce neuropathy, but check out Laurie & Jasper's page for additional treatment options using oral methylcobalamin (a form of vitamin B-12), and Jason & Mr. Kitts' research on using injectable methylcobalamin. This is useful as an adjunct to good regulation, but should not be considered a substitute. (The Life Extension Foundation also has some interesting supplement ideas.) In the meantime, Vesla & Blondie suggest using Shaw's Paw Wax to help your cat get traction on slippery floors. Throw rugs will also give your cat places to stop and rest while trying to get around.
If you suspect your cat has neuropathy, please get a formal diagnosis; a cat can show some of these symptoms but have other problems such as arthritis or potassium depletion. If your cat is wobbly and walking in circles or erratically, you may be dealing with a hypoglycemic episode, in which case go immediately to question 1.4. If your cat can't walk at all, or has his head tilted, get him to the vet immediately.

No, there is no such thing as diabetic polio. The muscle weakness could be due to other things too like low potassium blood level.
I would take Osi to the vet to be checked out.

Do cats like bananas? Will it help cure the polio which now I think my cat most definitely has?!

Cats typically do not like bananas.
Since yo are reluctant to go to a vet, i recommend that you get some Keto-Diastixs and test your cat's urine. The strips show if there is glucose in the urine which is an indicator of diabetes. They also show if there are ketones present. Ketones, if present, are serious an mean a prompt visit to the vet. The following shows the test strips. You can likely purchase them from a local pharmacy. You may have to ask the pharmacist.

Once again, cats can NOT get polio.

There are several reasons why your cat could be walking funny. Diabetic neuropathy, arthritis, an injury, low potassium.

If it is low potassium, that can be serious because potassium helps to regulate the heart.

Once again, you need to take you cat to a vet so you get a proper diagnosis. Please, help your beloved kitty and get him some medical care ASAP.
I'm scared if I take him to the vet, they'll put him to sleep b/c they don't like cats w polio I'm pretty sure
A vet can not put your cat to sleep without your permission and you need to sign papers to give that permission.

Please, take your cat to the vet to see what is going on. We can not diagnose what is going on with your cat over the internet and neither could a vet. Your cat needs to be seen at a vet clinic.

Hi folks,

Just found this info on 'Borna disease', which also apparently has other names including 'feline polio':
http://vetbook.org/wiki/cat/index.php/B ... ease_virus

These are the symptoms listed in 'Clinical Signs':

"It has generally been accepted that BDV causes a persistent infection of the central nervous system (CNS), which may be expressed as mild behavioral changes or severe neurological disease.

Progressive non-responsive paraparesis and pelvic limb ataxia of 1-2 months duration seem to be the common clinical signs in affected cats. Focal hyperesthesia, head tremor, pelvic limb ataxia, sacral hyperesthesia, fever anorexia, aggression, staring activity, seizures, hypersensitivity to light and sound, inability to retract claws, and increased affection toward owners are also reported[14][15]. Antemortem diagnosis is difficult. "

@Chris~ I am so sorry that your cat is sick and sincerely hope the sickness is something than can be cured.
(((Hugs))) to you.

Eliz

Thank you Elizabeth! We stand corrected. Learn something new everyday.

Still, I think a vet would need to diagnosis whatever is going on with this kitty.

Chris

I have 16 cats..every single one of them will lick intensely especially during shedding season, will drink water but not too excess and love to stare off into space. Even jump and miss.

If you truly believe there is something wrong with Osi then a vet visit is in order.

Borna disease?? THAT'S what he has? Wow.

ty for all your research and information. and yes, Osi does stare into space which I think is another indication of his polio. I tried to feed him a banana but he keeps spitting it out. I yell "GET BETTER" at him while doing it in hopes we can reverse his polio (he just fell off the couch...)

Hi Chris,

Nobody here is saying that your cat has Borna disease.
I posted the link to info about Borna disease because it is also known as 'feline polio', and you have concerns that your cat may have polio.

In order to find out what is wrong with your cat you will have to take him to a vet.

Keeping fingers and paws crossed that all goes well for you.

Eliz

If you really have a cat having difficulty standing and walking, GO TO A VET!

We are not vets. We cannot diagnose or treat veterinary conditions.

The ONLY way to properly take care of your cat is to TAKE HIM TO A VET!!!

We have posted ideas, not a diagnosis. ONLY A VET CAN DIAGNOSE your cat. If you care for your cat PLEASE take him to the your vet ASAP.

PS: I hope you are not pranking us. We care about caregivers and their cats. If this is a prank, fess up and end this discussion.

dont know how to delete my previous post, so I am just editing out its content.

Please, no more private messages giving me @#$%.

I thought about that but occasionally we do get real posters (I think they were real) which post similar problems. If it was real and I questioned it that would likely insult the poster.

What city/state do you live in? We might have a member that lives near you that can recommend another vet if you feel that way about the one you are using.

I'll echo what most other people have said.... you're kitty needs to go to a vet who can figure out what is wrong with him. Nobody here can give you a diagnosis. None of us are vets.

Carl

Maybe it's because I'm new here, but I'm just wondering if the original poster here is just pulling y'alls leg? To me, they don't sound completely serious, and it's almost like they keep "poking" y'all to get more responses.

this is a picture of Osi:

you can see the signs of polio in his eyes and he also likes looking directly into the sun as well in addition

Without knowing what is actually causing your kitties symptoms, a home cure is simply not possible. A vet visit to find out what is actually going on with your kitty is still our recommendation.

Chris,
WHAT are you going to home cure?

I can't see anything in your cat's eyes but beautiful kitty and beautiful eyes. PLEASE visit a vet to find out what your kitty has - yelling at him to eat won't do anything but scare him. If he's diabetic and his problem is diabetic neuropathy, you're letting him suffer....

But since you haven't been to a vet you don't know what it is. A vet can diagnose and treat this. What if it's something else and he is suffering and in pain because a diagnosis never happened?

but if he sleeps and I let him have all the wet food he wants (he meows until I give him wet food, he also loves coffee for some reasaon???) maybe it'll go away I think probably

So far NOTHING that poster has described is out of the realm of NORMAL cat behavior. If what has been described is signs of cat polio then I have 16 cats with polio. Because every single one of mine have miss calculated a jump and missed. Stare at things only they know what they're looking at, groomed vigorously etc.

Coffee/caffeine is poisonous to cats, don't let him have it. It can kill them. That could be making him sick.

You never answered me- where are you, are you in the United States or another country?

.

I live in the U.S.A.!!!

& Mel: your cats could all have polio, I would be careful w them and don't let them drink too much coffee ~O)

i think your cat might have polio but i'm not sure if cats cat get polio?
take him to a vet ASAP he needs to be looked at thoroughly

cat_diabetes, chris, littlekittens... i'm no longer sure what name to call you. this thread has become rather silly and very bizarre, so i'm closing it.
i do think you've already been given excellent advice. please take Osi to your vet. any vet. a vet will perform diagnostic testing to help provide answers to your questions.
wishing you and Osi the best...
