Does feeding too much cause blood glucose to be high

Since my cats been diabetic he can eat 12onz plus a day but we haven't seen much of a decrease in his blood sugar with insulin. Should I feed him as I used to before he was ill (6onz) a day and see if it helps to lower his levels? I'm just scared of him getting thin.

Any advice appreciated. Wondering if vetsulin needs to be changed for ProZinc.
 
Until he's better regulated, he's going to need more food than a "normal" cat would eat.

Diabetics can't process the food they're eating correctly without the right amount of insulin......Think of insulin as a "key", and on every cell of the body there's a "lock"....without the right amount of keys, no matter how much glucose is in the bloodstream, it can't get into the cells to nourish them

As for the insulin, Vetsulin isn't a great insulin for cats...If you can get Lantus, Levemir or ProZinc, they're generally longer lasting and gentler

Also, it's important to be getting tests on the PM cycle too.....without at least a "before bed" test on the PM cycle, it's possible he could be dropping at night and then bouncing again by morning. We have seen cats go from 400 to 40 and back to 400 before. Without testing in between somewhere, you'd assume they needed more insulin when in fact, they needed less

Thanks for this advice. I just wondered if feeding more increases levels? What about feeding in between shots is this not a good idea? This is so difficult and nearly every time I test he's over 350 I'm worried he's insulin resistant. I will try to do more pm tests. His ears are so sore, feel bad for him. I think we might have to see the vet soon to try to change to ProZinc. Thanks again, so worried about him ☺

Most of us feed multiple small meals throughout the day.....the only time it's really important for him not to eat is the 2 hours immediately before Pre-shot test times.

Multiple small meals instead of 2 big ones is easier on the pancreas and can help to keep them more level

Cats actually have very few pain receptors in the edges of their ears....Think about how many Tom cats you've seen with torn up ear edges.....the Lord knew what he was doing!!

You can always use a little Neosporin with pain relief ointment (not cream) to help heal them quicker
 
In a non diabetic cat, feeding causing the pancreas to kick in and produce insulin so in many cases it actually lowers the numbers. With a diabetic cat is has the opposite affect but.......in a way this is a wrong question. I don't know how much food your cat needs and I am assuming that at this time you are not overfeeding him.
Things need to be kept as normal as possible so when you find the dose of insulin that works, it will be the right dose and you won't have to adjust the insulin again. I usually tell people that are giving Lantus that their cat can eat as much as they want when they want. (as long as it is proper food)
You have been at this a short time and you are starting to see some progress. It will get better

Well he used to only have 6onz a day which is normal but now he can easily get through double that. So am I right in thinking that overfeeding him being that he's diabetic could make his levels rise? When he's on the correct dose I assume he won't be as hungry? I think we need to keep increasing were at 2.5 units at the moment and he's still only getting numbers in the 300-400 range. I have noticed Vetsulin is not lasting the full 12hrs
