There was a post last year in the Health section on this topic that I thought I would bump to this group. We're noobs and thought others might also benefit from this info...though this group is so active that the daily updates push the "other" posts off the page very quickly.

We had been testing Lug from the inside of his ears, because we thought that is that way it was done. After a few poke throughs, and taking advantage of the easier access from the outside, I decided to research it. Turns out a lot of people test from the outside. It is all we do now, and it is much more comfortable for Lug since we don't have to work at such a funny angle. He usually just ignores it now! ;-)

My cat is black so I test on the inside--She is used to it, I couldnt see the blood on the outside of her ear--
Guess it is what works for you..There are no rules for this. Do what works for you.

outside for us. my cat is not one that comes with many options unfortunately, being a streetwise girl and all, she doesn't tend to "allow" much from us lowly humans

I also have a black cat, and it is quite difficult to see the vein and blood from the outside. I use the inside and one ear is much easier to find the vein than the other.

My cat has black ears, and I only test from the inside of the ear. I wouldn't be able to see the blood through the black fur on the outside.

good morning! i also test from the outside of the ear - and have gone clear through a few times - but i'm not sure it matters. wherever you poke it will grow more capillaries and the blood will come easier within a couple of weeks. during that first two or so weeks, i basically poked anywhere i could to get blood. and yes, now one ear bleeds easier than the other.

S'mores ears are dark, but I've found the outside is MUCH easier because it involves less playing with his ear (which he hates). I do need good light to see the blood, but it's not bad now.

I also thought I had to to the inside when I started, but after watching a bunch of youtube videos, I realized the almost everyone I saw was doing the outside.

I do outside...Zoe's ears are dark....but it works! The first time she was on insulin....only her left hear would bleed well...this time only her right ear bleeds well! First time around she would fight us tooth and claw if we even tried her right ear.....left ear she was fine with. This time.....we get teeth and claws if we try the left ear, and purrs if we poke the right ear. Silly kitty!

Mocha's ears aren't black but they are very dark brown .. but we still poke from the outside .. we just know right where the "sweet" spot is for her
