Yes, when using the vial, you eject air into the vial to equalize the pressure of what you will be drawing out.
So, move plunger up and down to spread the lubricant in the barrel, place plunger at your selected dose, put needle into vial and inject the air, firmly holding on to the plunger to get the air bubbles from forming, then tip vial upside down and now draw out the insulin. Remove syringe, squirt out any tiny excess into the sink or a tissue and you're good to go.
