Does one need an rx for subQ fluids (and needles) for home use for non CKD cats? Obviously this can't replace vet care but do any of you keep fluids on hand in case of dehydration?
Correcting minor dehydration is best accomplished by adding more water to the diet. This helps keep electrolytes in balance. Giving fluids subQ can really throw electrolytes out of wack, and can be dangerous for the heart in some cases. It's really a last-ditch kind of measure when you can't get fluids in any other way.
Most cats need about 300ml of fluids (which includes the water in wet food). Diabetic cats might need a little more depending. This really isn't that much fluids if you measure it out and consider what is in the food as well.
What's going on with your cat that your are concerned about dehydration?
I would like to correct that last statement about fluids. I have bought them many times at Sam's. No prescription required. None required for the needles or setup either. We buy them all the time.
I had a cat with renal disease and he required sub Q fluids periodically for hydration. You vet can supply both the fliud and the equipment need for delivery. I found it easier than going through a medical supply company. Good luck from Jane and Stewey
