Hello all! I just adopted a kitten from our local shelter, he is coming home tomorrow. I want to do right by him from the start and was wondering does anyone on here have experience giving raw food to there kitten? I make my own (dr. Laura's recipe) and hoped to feed him that like I do my other two boys. Any thoughts would be appreciated, thank you! Julius is still OTJ since 3/18/ 11 thanks to this board! Thank you all!

Yes, kittens would do more than good on raw food since that is the cats natural food.

Just start out with smaller amounts for a few days not to upset his tummy.

How old is he?

also, kittens need to grow, gain weight, with 10-15 gram* per day. Do you have a scale to weigh the kitten on? And perhaps they need a little higher content of fat and vitamins and minerals, but that can easily be adjusted while making the raw food.

What does your dr. Laura's recipe say about the mix for kittens?

The figures I have are
protein 42 %
fat 25 %

*on the weight gain per day
10 gram = 0.022046 lb
15 gram = 0.033069 lb

Kittens do great on raw and readily accept new foods to try

I adopted one of my civie cats at about 6 months old and she took to raw after a week or so of transition from canned. I feed her and my other civie (who was weaned onto raw) Nature's Variety frozen raw.

I don't think there are any kitten-specific homemade raw recipies out there :?: But I really don't know. On anothe rboard, people just feed their kittens the same that the aduls eat. Maybe Dr. Lisa would know if a kitten has specific nutrient requirements and how a recipie would be adjusted?

I have a very good cat book here which says kittens at 10 weeks age needs 200 kcal/body kg --- after how much it weighs, per day, and that the mothers milk contain 9.5 % protein and 4.8 % fat, and the adult cat needs 80 kcal/body kg --- after how much it weighs and with that 6 % protein per body kg per day.

Yea, maybe Dr Lisa can break it down for the kitten

* 1 kg is 2.20462 lb

thanks for the input thus far... he is 13 weeks. I don't have a scale to weigh him but I can get one. Tonite and through the weekend I will probably use what I just made for my other two, for ease as I have a sick hubby I am tending to as well. I hope Dr. Lisa weighs in!

Everything I've read says cats started out on an appropriate diet do great in the long run. There is a great chart on the Max's House site on kcal needed by age. I converted it the other day. BRB.

Here it is:
Energy Requirements for Kittens and Adult Cats
…….Age …..kcal/lb body wt ….kcal/kg body wt
Kittens:
  • 10 weeks ….113 …………..248
    20 weeks …...59 …………..130
    30 weeks ..….45 …………….99
    40 weeks …...36 …………….80
Adult Cats:
  • Inactive …...18 …………..40
    Active …......20-30 …….45-65
    Pregnant ..…45 ………....99
    Lactating* ...56--145 ....123--319

Nope - no kitten-specfic recipes. Kittens eat the same as adults....just A LOT more on a per pound basis!

There are no mice, rabbits, lizards, bugs, or birds running around with "kitten" or "adult" or "senior" or "tartar control" stamped on them. :-D
