Help.

This is our second day on Lantus. I updated his SS.

Today I did an AM PS and it was 7.0. I didnt shot, I fed and waited an hour. Then I retook it. IT is 5.4. I didnt shoot.

What should I do? Do I shoot the 1 IU anyway bc there is a shed to fil? OR leave it alone and see if his pancreas is kicking in on its own???

no advice only encouragement. I'm sure an expert will be along shortly. Those first low numbers can be scary, hang in there

Wish I could help with dosing, will give you a bump up the list. There should be more experienced eyes here soon. You may want to post on health too.

What insulin were you using previously? Is there any history that I can read? Also, what's your usual dose? You do not change doses with Lantus the way you have been with whatever the insulin was that you were using.

We were using Caninsulin. I have his spreadsheet in my siggy.

The dose of caninsulin was between 5 IU and 1.5 IU depending on Preshot numbers.

The dose on Lantus the vet said was 2 IU. But I have been giving 1 IU

Are you able to stall the shot? If you do, your PM shot will be 12 hours from whenever you shoot this morning. You will also need to get some tests in early in the cycle. I don't think you have enough data yet to shoot this low, especially since this is a dropping number.

If you opt to stall, do not feed your kitty.

The last test showed 4.7. No shot. Fed higher carb food. Vet wants number every hour.

I didnt know I shouldnt have fed him. Vet wanted to see numbers with some food. I am testing in 20 minutes.

Good plan.

Aside from switching to Lantus, did you make any other changes? It looks like you're feeding Fancy Feast and Special Kitty. I'm assuming these are low carb varieties.

Could you mark on your SS when you made the switch to Lantus? It will help for the future. FWIW, some cats will have this kind of an initial response to a switch in insulin. Now that the excitement has settled down a bit, you may want to look over the starred sticky notes at the top of the Board, They will help you become more familiar with Lantus and how this Board operates. It's going to take a bit of a mental switch given that you're familiar with using Caninsulin. Lantus dosing is very different. Dose decisions are based on the nadir, not on the pre-shot numbers.

Please let us know how we can help. This is a great place for information and support. (You can also take the 911 icon off of your initial post since you're not shooting.)

Welcome to LantusLand. since you didn't shoot this morning, tonight you can set your shot time to whatever is most convenient. You don't really have a shed filled up yet, it takes 5 to 7 days initially and skipping this morning has drained that a little too. Generally we want to see a nor food number at the preshot, so if our cat is low and we stall the shot we don't feed. That way we can tell if he is naturally goin down or if the insulin is wearing off and it will be safe to shoot.

there is a lot to lear, but it is doable. We are here to help.

i just want to add my welcome! you've found the best place you never wanted to be.

we can teach you how to use the lantus safely - we do it 24/7 all year round. there's a lot to learn but we help each other and will be glad to help you too.

glad you're here!

Thank you everyone. I was terrified when his numbers dropped so drastically.

I switched to Lantus yesterday, its on my SS.

Good job!!!

Could you please take the "911" off your post? Normally, as soon as you get a response and have eyes on your condo helping you, we ask that you take that off otherwise folks are looking in all day to make sure there is not
a big emergency :-D
