Hi everyone, just reading on the Lantus board about little Luna being hospitalized with DKA. We haven't been testing for ketones, as Simba only pees 2-3 times a day, never when I am around (he lives upstairs because he fights other cats). I bought a ketone-only meter from Amazon, the KetoSens brand, and control solution, but haven't yet set it up. I haven't been in a hurry, as Simba gets poked a lot anyway, and I figure as long as he is acting normally, and eating, as well as getting his insulin I don't have a lot to worry about, but that could be wrong. Reading Luna's story is scary about fast it can develop.

Does anyone have experience with the KetoSens unit? As of now, I can return it. How often is it recommended to test in the complete absence of symptoms? Thank you.

It was so much easier when there was only one blood ketone meter (Precision Xtra)! In the last couple of years, several brands have come on the market. At one point several years ago, NovaMax was offering a free ketone meter so many people took advantage of that offer. As the Keto diet has become more popular, more meters have come on the market. I would just do a search and look at reviews. I suspect that one of the biggest considerations is the price of strips. Strips for a ketone meter run about $1.00 per strip. They are pricey.

It's more important if your cat has a history of DKA to test for ketones. For a cat that's not prone to developing ketones even once DKA is history, I would want to periodically test, especially if my kitty was sick.

so would you recommend the precission Xtra as your first choice? the meter itself is expensive too, along with the strips?! Must be the market.
