Hi. I have read in a few places that distilled water is good for CRF cats because the minerals might be too hard on the kidneys. What about for cats with diabetes? I am about to purchase a water filter but I keep coming across sites that recommend distilled water. Any feedback is appreciated.

I have no idea really but when Fred got CRF and I read this I only gave him distilled water...and he was diagnosed with CRF 6 years ago. It's only in the past year that he's worsened. I never gave him the renal diet, because of the diabetes...and also I didn't want to drop his protein since he's so old and needs any he can get for muscle, etc. He may be rapidly speeding up his decline in the past month or so (he's 20y and 2months) but for the most part, perhaps the distilled water over the years helped him. Hard to say.

My opinion is that unless you really have a lot of minerals in your water, regular water is OK for all cats. Compared with the minerals and other stuff in food the small amount of minerals in regular water is minimal.

I would have to agree with Larry.
We live in the low desert and have VERY hard warter, so my kitty gets bottled water only. The difference is the line of minerals left in the water bowl from tap water. Even I dont drink that stuff yuck.

When we're in Yuma, AZ, I give only water that has been through our reverse osmosis filter.
The city water in Yuma is very hard and tastes awful.

But when in Washington state, I use our well water (private well). For everything including
drinking water for beans and cats. Very soft water with only a tiny bit of calcium.
And yummy !!
