Distemper Shot Question

We're just back from the vet, to get my cats their yearly Merial Purevax Rabies vaccines. The vet brought out 4 vials, and wanted to give them distemper shots too, as well as the rabies.

They got the rabies.

They had distemper shots last year and it made them sick for 24 hours. Do I really need to give them distemper shots? I made an appointment for Monday morning to give the distemper shots, but they said I could cancel, if I change my mind.

They do go outside a little bit, but there are few other cats that are let outside in the neighborhood, and the two that I can think of mainly stay by their own houses. Ginger does go off wandering sometimes. J.D. mainly just lays on the deck outside my condo. I do sometimes take the cats for walks out on the lawn area and sometimes around the block on the cement sidewalks. We are traveling to the Pittsburgh Reunion in 5 days, and there will be other cats there.

From what I have in my records:
J.D. received a Distemper shot in 2004, 2005, 2009, and 2011
Ginger received Distemper shots in 2004, 2005, 2010, and 2011

I also found a note that I had written about what my vet said to me years ago:
Dr. P says that the FELV and the FELOVAX IV are not needed but once every 2 to 3 years, especially since
neither cat has much exposure to other cats, and J.D. does not need to the extra stress being a diabetic.

I think I should cancel the appointment and not get the distemper shots this year.

Does anyone else have any opinions or experience or advice on this subject?

gosh. do not know dyana. not many cats coming. mine and I think just spot.
my cats only get shots when they go in for dentals. otherwise nada

The 4 in one or 5 in one Fvrcp shots include panleuk shots and every 3 years is the recommendation. Your vet is not up on vaccine protocol.

Last year they got FVRCP shots. Do you know if that is the 1 year or the 3 year vaccine?

I just found this site http://www.catsonlyvethosp.com/vaccines.html

FVRCP (Distemper) Vaccine

Our hospital uses the Merial PUREVAX® feline FVRCP vaccine to protect cats against three viruses: feline herpesvirus, feline calicivirus and feline panleukopenia. The initial kitten series includes vaccine administration every 3-4 weeks with the last vaccine administered after 16 weeks of age. This booster vaccine is administered at 1 year of age and then every 3 years. This vaccine is required for all cats.

I think my cats are fine until 2014.
The vets just don't seem to know. :-|
