Disposal of supplies?

The lancets should go in a Sharpe's container with the syringes. I bought mine at Wal-Mart, and apparently can change it out at the local fire station. It's not full yet, since he stopped getting insulin.
I gave my insulin away, so I can't answer that one. I have been putting the used test strips in the old container then tossing it in the trash, but that has just been one. Not sure if they should go in the Sharpes.

Personally, I treat it all like used medical waste and put it all into the Sharps conainer. Anything that comes into contact wiht bodily fluids (blood, urine, etc) should be treated like medical waste, IMO. Old insulin in the original container isn't hazardous in any way but I would still treat it as such. I know there are people who just toss used lancets and test strips into the trash.

Pharmacies sell the red hard plastic Sharps containers and may even take back the full ones. Your vet may also take back the full Sharps container. Some cities and towns have a biohazardouse waste center or even a specific day(s) in which residents can bring stuff in for proper disposal. You could also use an empty laundry detergent bottle or coffee can to store your used stuff. Just tape up securely and dispose in the regular trash.
 
Just go to your county's/town's/city's website and search the trash section. It should say. It variesby jurisdiction. My county incinerate their trash in is co-generation plant. All I have to do is put the sharps in a leak-proof, unbreakable container (plastic laundry detergent bottle) and put it in the regular trash.

I also use a plastic laundry detergent bottle. In my state, there are designated drop off locations to dispose of them: http://www.health.ny.gov/diseases/a...arps/directory_sharpscollection.htm#directory. I label them with my name and address and take them to the hospital that's near where I work.

Lancets I throw in empty test strip bottles and go in the trash. So do test strips.
 
I no longer use syringes, since Checkers is OTJ, but do still test him daily, it's been only two months.
I put used to put used syringes in coffee cans. I still put lancets and used strips in coffee cans, taped securely. in regular trash.

I have racoons and occasionally a neighbor's dog, get into my trash, so these things would be a danger to them, if just tossed in bag.

Thanks for this! I've been putting the used strips (ketone and test) in the trash. My logic was that there are tons of instances were we throw human blood in the normal trash, so I figured kitty blood could be put in there as well. Same thing with urine; I throw his litter in the normal trash, as well as the millions of rolls of paper towels I've used cleaning up accidents and "misses!" What do you think?
 
I bought clippers to use on the syringes--it cost about $4 and will hold 1500 needle tips. So once used, I'd clip off the needle, then toss the rest of the syringe in the trash. I used a sharps container for the lancets. Test strips just went in the trash--they had less blood than a band-aid, so I figured that was okay and was never told any different by the vet.

My vet would have taken the sharps waste--they just said to put it in a container and drop it off whenever, but Max went OTJ before the sharps container was ever filled. And I was told to just put that in the trash, securely sealed.
 
I put test strips in the trash too, same reason, bandaids go in there and so do tissues and things like that.

Where I live we can dispose of Sharps container in the trash if we properly seal it, so I've been doing that.
 
I put the sharp things in a milk jug per my pharmacist's recommendations and throw it away in the trash. Everything else just goes in the trash. I don't want to look at that link, Marcy, and learn that I'm doing it all wrong ;-) Ignorance is bliss ohmygod_smile I throw away countless items with bodily fluids on it everyday...I'm trying to potty-learn my 2 year old who loves to pee on the floor as soon as her diaper comes off :shock:
 
Charliemeow, No milk container--bleach or laundry marked SHARPS then it can go in the garbage. I better write on my container SHARPS. I was just thinking how do others get rid of the needles. :smile:

I know, this got me thinking about that too! Kind of crazy! ;-)

What about the little bottles the test strips come in? Can I re-purpose them for something else? Or recycle them at the least?

roflmao @ Charliemeow. too funny!

and as far as the test strip bottles......in my house they make for cheap toys for the cats. i'll even put a penny in them sometimes so they make noise as they get batted around but i don't leave the penny in there when i'm not home. i can't trust Fuji to not eat the darn penny!

I like to make jewelry, and they would be PERFECT to store beads in. Is that okay or do the bottles contain some sort of secret poison or something? ;-)
 
I always test Kazi on my bed - so I have a small tupperware container for used lancets and I recycled an old test strip tube that I toss used strips into. Every couple of weeks I dump the lancets into my sharps container & the used test strips into the trash.

Glad the link for disposal in each state was listed - looks like I can dispose of the syringes and lancets in the trash! All this time I have been making a special visit to the Vet. ohmygod_smile
