Disco 12/22 Update, Lantus arrived Sat instead of Mon!

Got the Lantus ordered from Mark's Marine on Fri 12/13 and called them on Monday to see if it had shipped (figured they would wait until Monday and not ship over a weekend) and they said it was being shipped on Tues 12/17 and I would receive a tracking # etc. I did and it said it would arrive on Mon 12/23 so I planned on being home all that day to sign for it. On Dec 19, tracking said release to USA post office with delivery still as Mon 12/23. On Sat Dec 21, it was delivered but I wasn't there to sign and unfortunately, I did not check the tracking site to check on Sat morning, my error, too but also didn't get an email update on the delivery date. I can pick it up at the post office on Mon morning 12/23 and hope that it will be ok. I had the option of going online and having them redeliver it, but thought that might take more time.

I was a bit concerned til I reread the Insulin Care Sticky. This group is such a valuable resource!

So, I am a bit anxious about starting it on Christmas Eve and am thinking I will wait until 12/26. I did get the Harbor Freight digital calipers, a A4LED TikTeck Light Box and a AIXPI 30X Lighted Magnifying Glass and am going to practice on filling some used syringes and calibrating the dose of Lantus. His vet said to start at 1-2u and group said if I want to be conservative, start at 1.25u but that I could do 1.5 as he is currently on 1.6u of Vetsulin. I think I will do the SLGS protocol and start at 1.25u.

Currently, I am using the UltiCare VetRx U-100 3/10cc x 31g with half unit markings and didn't know if there was a member that had calibrated dosing with those syringes, but have read and reread and watched the videos on using a caliper etc, and hope my unimpressive math skills are up to this!

I'm going to post this next question on the general forum, but I use a 26g lancet and Disco's paw pads and usually put neosporin w'pain (no zinc) on to help but twice I have used plain vaseline in a new tube (last night and this morning as the neosporin tube rolled under the bed as I was about to test and he was already in my lap with the 'tourniquet' on), and his PSPM was 408 (usually in the 300's) and this morning, a 525 with the vaseline. Right away I retested him on a different pad, same foot but with neosporin) and got a 392. Do tests vary that much or could it be the vaseline?

Wow, sounds like you're getting those ducks in a row. You're starting off with all the right tools! Nice:cool:
Meters are allowed a 15-20% variance. Here's an article about that. I'm not sure if Vaseline can cause a difference in #s. Good question. Stress can cause #s to rise some.
Got the tools...just not the confidence, but after being on Vetsulin since 10/25, I am eager for a change in the blue direction!

Welcome to the Lantus Basaglar and Levemir forum! I LOVE the very Christmas forward pic of Disco! How sweet :D I was really happy with the progress we made on Lantus after Mowgli and I switched from Vetsulin, I especially like how I dont have to stress if he doesn't eat right away.

No matter if you start Lantus on the 25th or 26th, don't be too surprised if you don't see an improvement straight away, Lantus is a depot style insulin so it can take up to 3 days for it to build up in Disco's system and show you what it can do.

I would be really surprised if the vaseline affected Discos BG level, I wonder if it could have just been a faulty strip that gave you the 525?

When I started here I began with SLGS too, it was a nice way to ease in and get the data to see Mowgli's patterns. I will say that Mowgli has spent more time in better numbers since we started TR in November, I work away from home for 10 hrs a day and its been manageable for me :) no pressure though, you should follow the protocol that will work best for you :)

Can't wait until Boxing Day so we can start to see Santa-Disco's progress :D:D

If you're able to get the Lantus on Monday, why wait until the 26th to start? Nosy me. If you are going to be out of the house or lots of people at your place, it's your call. I look at it that if you're going to use Vetsulin and give a shot, what's the difference with shooting Lantus.

FYI - Amanda is correct in that it can take a week for the depot to get established. Some cats do, in fact, have a marked response to a change in insulin.

Sounds like it is all coming together. Next time you order from Marks, you can tell them to release the signature. That is what I do. If you work have it delivered there. It will be okay though.

Will be watching the progress.
