Question...I cat sit this weekend...Gulliver has hypert and I haven't seen him for awhile and he looks like crap. He's on 1 tapazole pill twice a day, didn't notice the dose...he's skin and bones and seems pretty lethargic. I spent a bit of time petting him tonight and noticed his eyes seem quite dilated...the room wasn't brightly lit but it seemed odd. Is this common for hypert cats? I did leave them a note about their food choice...dry C/D

Jen, try using a flashlight to see if his eye constrict. Also, sounds like he needs his med level checked, maybe an increas e in the tap is needed. I would also see if they would be willing to do at least a BP check on him.

I didn't think of grabbing a flashlight to see if they responded, it was blood pressure that I was wondering about and wondered if high blood pressure went hand in hand with hypert or not. Darn, wish I'd done that as I'm done for now with another sitter feeding him his meds tomorrow and then his beans come home. As for his dose, it has been doubled since just over a year ago but I don't know what is normal.....Something tells me he isn't going to be around much longer...they are planning to get 2 puppies in a few months and I can' see them doing that with him this way

Yes it can be associated with hypertension -- please urge them to take him in ASAP. Hypertension makes a person/cat feel just terrible (and he may be blowing his retinas out).

Oh jeeez, he certainly sounds unregulated. :-|

HyperT can cause heart and blood pressure problems, and high blood pressure can cause retinal detachments. Does he seem to be able to see? Does he follow you with his eyes? And can you contact the other sitter to see if s/he will use the flashlight to see if his pupils react?

Treating hyperT can also unmask CRF ... and I'm thinking that he sounds like a renal failure kitty. And on dry food.

Poor, poor baby .... that just breaks my heart.

He's Gone

They came home late this afternoon and he had laboured breathing. They called me and I told them of my worries (they hadn't seen my emails to them). I said to get him to the ER and they did...turns out he has heart problems and the simple act of trying to insert a rectal thermometer caused him huge distress. They were given the option of treating but chose to help him to the bridge...I told them that when I looked into his eyes last night, I thought he was going soon.

This is so sad... please tell your GAs to watch for Sir Gulliver at the bridge

Gulliver

Jen, thanks for letting us know about Gulliver. So sad but at least they were there with him and he didn't die alone. wings_cat
