Hi everyone!

My cat Basil was diagnosed last year and put on a very low dose of Lantus. I changed his diet to Fancy Feast and the Friskies, and he came off insulin after 9 days. Last week I tested him and his numbers were wayyyy up, so off we went to the vet. (a new one, since we've moved)

After close to $300 in tests (blood, urine, fructosamine etc) the vet determined (drumroll please)......that he's borderline diabetic. He didn't want to put him on insulin, since he is just on the edge or normal, but thinks he can regulate it with a new diet plan.

The fructosamine test showed a high level of crystals in his urine, so the vet chose to put him on Royal Canin SO wet and dry food. I am to feed Basil less, so that he drops some weight. (vet said crystals formed by poor quality food)

Its all a little overwhelming. It seems like everything the first vet told me the new vet contradicted.

Does anyone have any opinions of the Royal Canin SO food? Any equivalents out there that will combat the crystals without emptying my bank account?

At the moment I am feeding Basil and his younger brother Monkey the same diet. Monkey's a picky eater, so I feed him up higher where Basil can't get at it.

Any thoughts would be welcome.

Thanks!

well to start the dry food will not help at all. Do not feed dry period. so I suggest you return that at a minimum to the vet.

please read this regarding dry food and food in general as dr. lisa very nicely explains why it's so bad.

additionally, once a diabetic, always a diabetic be it in remission or not, but you need to always treat your cat as if she is diabetic and feed diabetic friendly food.
