Hi All, in addition to diabetes, my boy battles feline hyperesthesia. I have been reading that the phenobarbital he takes for that could actually have a hand in his diabetes--as in it could have caused it and/or it fights with the insulin. Anyway, I have been reading that healthy fats are a clue to battling his neurological disorder, and have been thinking of adding bacon grease to his food. Looking it up online, bacon grease has no carbs--imagine that! Any thoughts to adding this to his Fancy Feasts? FYI--he was diagnosed with diabetes one month after starting on pheno. Coincidence? Maybe... :-(

Bacon grease from what I know is fine to add to your kitty's food but when you buy your bacon be sure that the package says NO NITRATES and NO NITRITES, that's very important.

I don't know where you live and you probably don't have an HEB there since that's only a Texas store I think but look at the imagine in this link, scroll over it to make it bigger so that you can read what it says and that will tell you what you're looking for when it comes to a bacon to feed your cat.

Thanks for this! No we don't have HEB's here but plenty of other natural food stores that I bet would have something similar. I'm going to look tonight!

Maybe Whole Foods?
I don't even think that you have to go to Whole Foods really. When I went to HEB looking for uncured bacon I was sent to the organic section and I found these packs of bacon with about 5 slices for 10 bucks, I nearly fainted lol. I decided to browse the regular section where all of the other bacon was at and that's when I found the stores version of uncured, natural bacon. I bet that most stores have something similar if they want to be able to compete. I would suggest checking the regular stores first before diving into Whole Foods and spending your entire paycheck lol.

I did check Von's this evening and they had only bad stuff. Gonna check Whole Foods, Sprouts and Trader Joes's. Thanks again!

I think that Trader Joes has something. If you need to, ask an employee where they keep the "uncured" bacon. You would be surprised but cured bacon does have carbs and uncured bacon does not. Also uncured bacon doesn't have the nitrites and nitrates. Many companies are catching on to this healthy lifestyle craze and they are starting to carry uncured bacon just make sure that you check because you don't want to get stuck in their tiny organic section. Let us know what you find.

Hi I bought Trader Joes brand of uncured. They had another one too. Luckliy he liked it just fine mixed in with his Fancy Feast. And it made a lovely BLT for me!

Do you have a Stop and Shop? The Nature's Promise brand has no nitrates and it's not that expensive. Maybe a dollar more than Oscar Meter.

Omg my cat has this too and I'm at my wits end. This is all new for us. The FHS, not diabetes. He's on Prozac. About 3 weeks in.

Just replied to your other one. Prozac did wonders at first for us for a while, it was like a miracle. What is the dosagae, it should be kicking in by now.?
