Diet advice for a diabetic British Shorthair on Lantus

Hello FDMB,

We're struggling to find the right diet for our boy, Matty. A 12 year old British Shorthair currently at 4kg but had been as high as 6.5kg before his diabetic diagnosis.

He had been on kibble his whole life and we've successfully transitioned away from it and are now on a combination of wet food and home cooked meat.

The wet food is gastro specific, and we are slowly phasing that out too as his gastro issues are resolving, and aim to be on pure home cooked food as a of a few days from now.

We add a cat specific supplement to his cooked food called Felini Complete.

He is under weight at 4kg, so we would like him to get back to a healthier weight, targeting 6.5kg.

What we're struggling with:
1. What daily caloric intake should Matty be on?
2. What is the correct caloric fat ratio?

We've read a number of contradicting things online that have left us confused.
We fear we are under feeding him fat resulting in gluconeogenesis.

Our current home cook food mix is at follows:
60% chicken breast + 40% chicken thigh which to our understanding is roughly 18% fat. (With an added full dose of Felini Complete)

We've read that this is fat ratio is too low and should be closer to 35-40%.

We would greatly appreciate if somebody could shed some light on this, thank you 🙏

Hey there! First of all, I just want to suggest that you edit your post to add the "?" prefix to the thread (you'll see the dropdown for prefixes to the left of the box for a post title). Since it's such a busy board, this can help catch peoples' attention and get responses faster.

The information out there about caloric intake is confusing, I agree - I'm also trying to get my cat back up to his ideal weight range, and I haven't found good answers. That said, I also am not currently in a position to prepare his meals from scratch, so I know much less about that. I know @Staci & Ivy makes all her cat's food, so she may have some thoughts to share! I'm not sure who else does off the top of my head, but hopefully others will chime in.

With a. Underweight cat you can feed as much as he wants. Spread it out over several small snacks in between meals when possible. How much to feed depends on so many factors such as age, activity level and calories in the food you feed. Once the desired weight returns I weigh my cats weekly on a digital baby scale. Getting a little fluffy, I reduce the food a tad, losing weight then I increase the amount a little. When working on regulation cats often require a lot more calories than they did in the past. I hope this helps.

I work with a nutritionist (veterinarian) who formulates the recipes for me based on Ivy's medical situation. (Otherwise I would have no idea how to figure it out myself!) 🥰

Thank you all for the responses! We realized we had been underfeeding him the past few days. Matty was begging for food almost constantly, jumping up on all the services, making his way into the rubbish bin to see what he could scavenge 😔 Poor boy! We've increased his food and he is doing much much better, a lot more calm now.

We were laser focused on the gastro issues for so long, it gave us tunnel vision!

@tiffmaxee a baby scale is a great idea! Our method has been to weigh ourselves with him then without him to see the difference, not very accurate 🫣

As of today Matty is officially on a low carb home prepared diet! We're really excited to have cut out the high carbs and look forward to the benefits it will give him.
It has been a long and painful journey getting to this point, to say the least.
