Just diagnosed with asthma. Still at the vet. Thankful for the diagnosis, at least we can move forward. Figured I'd ask people here about what has worked/didn't work or any tips and tricks for asthmatic diabetics. He has been prescribed Albuterol and next step is to purchase the actual thing that goes over his face.

Oh I am sorry! But at least you have a reason for the coughing and higher numbers! You might change the title of your thread in the Lantus forum as I know that there are several members there with asthmatic cats too.

Fritz my kitty has asthma.
I use Flovent 110mg inhaler with the aerokat inhaler 1 puff twice a day. I only use Albertoul as a rescue. When he has flare ups I give oral prednisolone.
Your vet might want you to use both Flovent & Albertoul till his asthma isis under control .
I also use only unscented everything in the home. No perfumes shampoo laundry soap dish soap.
Can't let them breath cigarette smoke or chimney smoke.
I also run a cool humidifier 24/7 along with a rabbit aire air cleaner with 5 different filters. Any thing that can pollute the air.
His asthma could be triggeted from food allergies ,pollutants, grass or ?????

Albertoul alone is not good enough that just opens the airway.Your kitty also needs Flovent. I order the Flovent from Canada its cheaper only draw back is you have to keep track of puffs. The Flovent from US comes with a measured meter

Ok so I should take him in again for a second opinion/a prescription for Flovent?

We've been sleeping with a cool most humidifier which I'm neurotic about keeping clean. He's had an air purifier since last November running 24/7 and I've been giving him lysine in his food every day. I'm avoiding using scented stuff around him so I won't trigger him.

She said she wants to try just the Albuterol at first but he may develop a resistance to it. She doesn't want to put him on a steroid inhaler right away like Flovent because of his diabetes still being unmanaged.

Yes if it is asthma you need Flovent.
Google feline diabetes there is a lot of great info out there. I buy mine from Canada drugs it costs about 50 for two months if you use twice daily. The Albertoul is cheaper so I but it from Walmart.

" Can you just call your vet you shouldn't have to go to another vet. They should have already prescribed it.

I agree. Albuterol is a bronchodilator and id be uncomfortable using a drug like that for him more than a couple times per week. I have the X-ray they took today on a disc and will make an appt with his regular vet who manages his diabetes. Try to get him in this week so I can have all this medicine ordered

I went to the vet clinic that I first went to, the clinic where he had a doctor who refused to write me a rx for lantus. But at his new vet clinic, appts are cheap but X-rays are $100 compared to $20 at the old clinic. So we went back to the old clinic. I wouldn't bank on those people exactly knowing how to treat Diego, given their track record.

Flovent goes directly into the lungs not the blood stream so it doesn't affect his affect his bgs like oral steroids.
Trust me Ive been down this road for at least 5 to6 years now.
The last thing I want is to hurt my kitty.
Hopefully some of the others will be able to offer their experience too. I know Melissa & Tarragoon have asthma. I think thats her name? Please do search the web there is a ton of asthma info. If I was better on the computer I could link you to sites. Good luck breath betterDiego. Thank heavens you can treat both FD & asthma

I did 30 seconds of basic googling and the first link point blank said the appropriate therapy should consist of both the Albuterol and the Flovent. It makes me nervous that a person who goes by the title of Doctor wouldnt know that, or for whatever reason choose not to adhere to a proven method of treatment. I'm grateful that he was at least diagnosed there for cheap and sent home with SOMETHING. We will be at our regular doctor some time this week and in the meantime I will look into the best price for Albuterol. You said you buy from Walmart...mind mentioning the price? Is it smarter to buy in bulk or do you not use it that often? I wonder if SAMs is a little cheaper. I need to at least get something in him to make those lungs feel better until I can get the other medication.

Just remember Albertoul was made as a rescue. What are you going to use to rescue him if hes on it every day? Rescue works in 5 to 15 minutes lasts for about 8 hours and that allows time for the Flovent to work which lasts about 12 hours.
There have been times I had to rescue Fritz every half hour for up to two hours.
My vet did have Fritz on oral prednisoline for 14 days in the beginning as it takes that long for the Flovent to really start working. With the aerokat you shake the inhaler release the puff then place on kitties nose and hold while counting to 8or 10. Please dont push too hard you dont want to block his nose from breathing. After all these years Fritz still doesn't like it but tolerates it. I just straddle him on the floor its less stressful for him.

Albertoul comes in one dose amount and I paid$61.00. I buy 1 a year as I only use as rescue. Remember to shake for15 seconds and when new or havent used release a puff or two first. Now when you use as a rescue its 2 puffs. So shake spray place on covering nosenose and closed mouth.
I buy three canisters at a time from canada drugs for about $138 for 360 doses thats about 6 months. In the states youll pay anywhere from $400 on up for Flovent.
I don't know how bad Diego"s asthma is but midt kittied end up and managed on Flovent 220mg twice a day. I know this is a ton of info but it gets easier.

Albertoul used alone can make it worse.
At first you'll think this is working then all if a sudden your in the ER with kitty in an oxygen chamber.
Im not trying to scare you just helping you to learn from others mistakes. Please let me know how you guys are doing. Ill help you any way I can.
When Fritz was first coughing we lived in different Er's every week sometimes more.:bighug::bighug::bighug::):cat:

So it's definitely looking like I'll be ordering his Flovent from Canada once I get the rx. Stuff is pricey. I'm not scared; I was confused as to why she'd tell me to use a bronchodilator every day in the first place. A little frustrated too now that we're going to have to spend more money at another appointment on top of the money I'm having to spend for all of this. But if he can't breathe he can't breathe and he needs this.
