Did we hit our number?

Im new to this, and kind of nervous. I have been giving Hidey 2 units 2 x a day, until yesterday we upped it to 2.25 units since I had to work all day. Today we started at 2.5 units. I just tested him and he was 111 with the Alphatrak 2 and read 73 with the reli-on micro. Is this an ok number? Is it safe for him to drop so fast? the 111 was at +4. He is acting fine, I'm just nervous since I don't know really what I'm doing. I've learned a bunch on this site, but our numbers haven't been this low, I'm use to the 500's. Thank you for dealing with my newbie nervous questions :-D

Just tested again. At +5 he was 116 with Alphatrak 2, and read 73 with reli-on. Still acting fine

If you are able, I'd test at +5. I tend to test closely if Eddie is around 60ish (on a Relion), so if he were my cat, I'd test at the half hour mark to see where he's headed if he's still going down at +5. +4 is a little early in the cycle assuming that Hidey normally has nadir at +6, but he may flatten out and just hang in those lovely greens. If you want and/or need to slow him down a bit, what I usually do is feed a Tablespoon of normal LC foods. That should slow him a bit without popping him up. You don't want to feed a ton just in case you need to feed more so you don't fill him up. If he does keep going down at a pace you're uncomfortable with, or hits 50, edit the top of your post with the 911 symbol to get help. I'd also suggest if you need to, to edit your post with his Relion numbers if he continues to drop so as to get more eyes since most people are more familiar with the human meter numbers. The Hopefully, you've got a nice safe surf in the works!

Wow! Interesting. He has been plugging along with 2.25 and not doing much. That extra .25 made a big difference. That's a lovely blue, but I'm with Jen. I'd feed a little low carb and watch him.

And you might get a high number tonight. He is very likely to bounce from his first blue in a while.

Hi Sue, just wanted to note that the 111 was on an Alphatrack and it was a 73 on a Relion.

He should be headed back up by around +6 but yes, I'd watch him and test again. Jen's right. We get cautious around 50 and start to think about intervening with higher carb food or honey.

Thank you so much, I'm just so excited that we're on the right track.....hopefully it stays that way. Im going to be testing about every hour today to see what his numbers do.

I do have another question while I'm thinking about it. When he was diagnosed and I was shown how to give him insulin my vet just tented his fur/skin and put the needle in from the top, so that's what I did at first until I read on here and watched youtube videos and started to do the tenting and shoot from the side at a slight angle. When I was going from the top it didn't seem to phase him at all, but going from the side bothers him. I've been making sure to have it loose I guess I could say (not to include muscle) Does it make a difference on how the insulin works if you shoot from one way to another?

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! I feel like an idiot.

OK, well. I actually just looked at the insulin. YES I know duh me. My husband fills the syringes for me because I have a hard time filling them to certain marks. That being said, I've never looked at the insulin till just NOW to find out he's on vetsulin NOT prozinc. So I'm assuming that's the reason we are having a hard time getting his numbers down. I just called my vet and asked about prozinc and she said they have a hard time getting prozinc. I told her I could order it online and she asked me to try it for another week!

I cannot believe I did this ohmygod_smile

so, ummmm, ya. Now that I realized Im an idiot, just shoot me! Does anyone have any luck with remission with vetsulin?

No worries. Generally Vetsulin is harder to regulate with. It may explain the higher numbers. He could be dropping early in the cycle and bouncing back up for every preshot. His reaction to it so far is not promising. When cats are going to do okay with it, we generally see a pretty decent cycle without the big jump at the end. (your curve today will show you how fast the onset was, and how harsh and when he started back up.) I would keep asking my vet about ProZinc. He can get compounded PZI BCP if money is an issue.

Would it be easier with your vision issues if we made our responses larger font?

Although appreciate the thought but no I don't need the bigger font. With the syringes, theyre so small and its such a little amount I just keep going past the line so I just gave the job to my husband lol serves me right. I found Prozinc the cheapest at Drs Foster & smith. With all the info Ive already gathered prozinc seems like the way to go. OMG I have some choice words for myself, lol and my husband

Just to clarify, around 50 with with a human meter, 80 with a pet meter. ;-)

If you like to show things to your vet, this article from a vet journal, has fairly recent research on diabetes management. It's from May 2010.

AAHA Diabetes Management Guidelines for Dogs and Cats

Also, there was a special edition of the "Veterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal Practice" journal, devoted entirely to Feline Diabetes. From back in March 2013 and it pulled together a lot of the recent research on Feline diabetes. I don't have full access to that journal but your vet may.

It's Veterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal Practice, Volume 43, Issue 2, Pages 221-446 (March 2013), Feline Diabetes
