Hi everyone..

I was able to do the first glucose curve today. I honestly am not 100% I did it correctly considering Benny will free feed throughout the day as I've tried and failed to get him to strictly eat morning and night.

His vet started him on 2 units of Prozinc, 2x a day. He as diagnosed 3 weeks ago. He is 2 years old.

Here are my numbers... I will add them to the spreadsheet once I can figure it out (hopefully tonight). Is anyone able to give me any info on the numbers I got today?

BG levels using AlphaTrak2:
9am: 280 (ate and 2 units given)
11am: 230
1pm: 176 (ate a little bit of food - freeze dried Stella and chewy's)
3pm: 227
5pm: 268
7pm: 244
9pm: 258 (ate and 2 units given)

I will be sending these to my vet tomorrow morning as well. My goal is to stabilize him and (hopefully) get him reduced on insulin to eventually diet controlled ASAP. Diet is freeze dried Stella and chewy's dinner morsels as well as tiki cat! We just recently switched from dry food a few weeks ago, thank goodness!!!! Thanks in advance for any information!!

Hi Andrea and Benny and welcome to the forum.
I will ask @Bandit's Mom to help you with the SS.
Also if you could get the signature set up and tell us about Benny that would be helpful, thank you.
HELP US HELP YOU has the link to the signature, spreadsheet and hypo kit....make sure you have a hypo kit set up asap.

The normal starting dose is 1 unit.
Are you offering snacks during the cycles....I see you mentioned feeding strictly morning and night. This is absolutely not necessary...it is old thinking for old insulins.
Cats do much better when given several smaller meals during the day. I would give a main meal before all the insulin shots then 2 snacks as well, during all the cycles around about +2 and +5 as an example. Feeding the snacks during the first half of the cycles is better.

Those BG numbers look OK to me however I am not a Prozinc user. I'll tag @FrostD to have a look. I would not increase the dose until Melissa has had a look at them.
Are you testing before every shot so see it is safe to give the shot? And then testing around the +4 to +7 mark (vary the times) to see how low the dose is taking Benny?

Yes go ahead and increase by 0.25U. when you do a curve you let them eat/snack as they would normally, the only time we withhold food is 2 hrs before the shot.

It is unlikely he will become diet controller, since he's been low carb for awhile now you'd have seen a much bigger reduction in dose after transitioning food. So the first goal is getting him regulated (between 68-150 as much as possible); then for cats this allows the pancreas to heal and reduce dose requirements. Remission with ProZinc is not super common, I'd say maybe 5% of cats we see here as a rough guess? And those tend to be the steroid-induced ones.

Thank you for the information! Sorry- I should have clarified.. he has only been eating canned food for 3 weeks! He originally went into the vet for Hepatic Lipidosis and that's when we found the diagnosis of diabetes as well. He had been eating dry food his whole life (I didn't know how important and amazing canned food was for cats). Maybe I should talk with the vet about switching to a different insulin!

Hi and Welcome to you and Benny.

Curious, any other health issues? Has Benny been on steroids?

No other health issues! He has been eating canned food for 3 weeks now. We took him into the vet originally because he stopped eating completely and had hepatic lipidosis. That's when we found the diagnosis of diabetes. So I just switched him to low carb and he will eat the Tiki Cat succulent Chicken as well as the Stella and chewy's freeze dried dinner morsels!
