Did full 12 hour curve yesterday if someone wants to take a peek!Taking in another kitty to the vet in two days and giving him the BG results.thought I would get your opinion before I hear his,so I can be prepared what to say. Thanks!

Very pretty! Those are regulated numbers - in the mid 200s at preshot and double digits at nadir. It looks like a pretty good dose, or maybe a smidge less. Since you got a lower amps today, that might mean a little less might be good. (I am wondering how low he went overnight - we don't want him dropping in the 40s.)

You could try a fat one unit. You draw up a little more than one and then let out drops till it's just a little more than one, but less than 1.25. You can try it with colored water and mark the syringe where your "fat" is and use the sample syringe each time. It does look like you might be shooting below one unit soon (anti jinx) so you could look at getting U100 syringes and use the conversion chart. With U100s, you can shoot .2, .4, .6, .8 units, which comes in very handy.

I'll definitely make sure I don't pull back more than I am then.and ease up slightly, right now it is only a little little bit past the one unit line( I am recording 1.25,but I really think it is less than that(,115-120),just bought 100 -U40 syringes and would like to use them up and keep eyeballing doses.(So if vet says I should increase I should probably disregard..??)(I know they are highly against using the wrong size syringes,he said he would dilute the insulin before seeing me do that!I surely don't want him to monkey around doing that! Can you believe he doesn't think you need to test but every week or two for a curve! I am taking in another one of my precious babies Tuesday to get teeth cleaned and put under...makes me want to cringe at the thought!Iwill try to make sure I keep a close eye on his numbers and maybe try to stay up late one night to get a nighttime nadir reading.if I would have listened to him,I would not have caught the 139 reading before shot yesterday morning.I waited a good hour, fed him and retested like all of you guys say to do.He has gained one pound since last week! Thanks for taking time to look!

You might see if you could make a reference gauge.

Or use a stiff ruler with millimeter markings along the edge to give you a visual reference.

And some folks use calipers to measure a dose, particularly when they find the syringe markings are bad in a batch of syringes (it can happen; visually review your syringes!)

The best scenerio would be if your vet would realize what a great job you are doing, that you'd have kept him safe when just blindly shooting could have caused a deadly hypo, that U100 syringes will help you give safer doses going forward. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the vet visit will go that way.

It would make no sense to increase the dose, so if the vet says to, I'd just tell him that the nadirs are low enough and he is in regulated numbers and you wouldn't feel safe giving him more insulin. He isn't there when you pull up the insulin, so you can disregard bad advice.

If you can get by with .5, you may be able to lower doses without the U100s but they sure come in handy. If you don't need a prescription in your state, you could always pick up a few (they are not very expensive) Then when .5 works, use the U40s. When .8 is needed, use the U100s. What is the vet's issue? Have you showed him the conversion chart? It's just math, not vodoo. Diluting the insulin is NOT a good idea.

Thanks guys..hey I did NOT know that I could get a bad batch of syringes..I will check them out! yes,I will definitely not let him touch my bottle of insulin!! it has got to remain the same as far as I'm concerned!I hate to knock the guy..he's a very nice young fellow, but fresh out of school.Havent changed vets yet..he knows he has to work with me,that I can't be led by the nose! I will check out the conversion chart and make a copy and show him..we can buy U100s without a scrip.

You might show him the conversion math (some people need to see it to believe it)

U-100 has 100 units per mL
U-40 has 40 units per mL; thus it is only 40 % as concentrated as a U-100 insulin. You can get 40% of something by multiplying it by 0.4.

So 0.4 * the syringe tick mark value = the U-40 dose
0.4 * 0.5 = 0.2
0.4 * 1.0 = 0.4
0.4 * 1.5 = 0.6
0.4 * 2.0 = 0.8
0.4 * 2.5 = 1.0
0.4 * 3.0 = 1.2

or, every 0.5 unit tick mark on U-100 = 0.2 units of U-40

Thanks BJM...very interesting!Math has always been my weakest subject..But it seems easy enough!I will show him for sure.

My vet is pretty good and seems willing to learn, but she is always skeptical when I first introduce new information to her. I had to win her over slowly on the U-100 syringes. I presented her with the chart and asked about her opinion on using them (I didn't want to go in there with a "know-it-all" attitude). I asked her to research it to let me know if the chart was accurate and acceptable to use. She actually called the ProZinc company and asked about it - they told her the chart was correct.

Its great that your vet is willing to listen to your opinion, but also look for an answer if she doesnt have it. I dont know if youve posted your feeding schedule before, but have you tried mini meals? I only ask because it seems in the a.m bg is slightly higher. I know with Hidey if he doesnt eat in the middle of the night his bg will be higher in the am. Maybe a small meal might help lower that a.m #
